Indianapolis Museum of Art's Summer Nights Film Schedule 2014 includes Hitchcock, Hepburn and Hook

I like outdoor films if for no other reason than it sounds romantic and looks like fun in the movies. The reality is, naturally, somewhat different. It's even more romantic and even more fun in reality. Everyone is relaxed, enjoying their family or date and the evening is cherished because in Indiana outdoor activities (especially this year) is always at the mercy of Mother Nature.

As always, moviegoers are invited to bring their own picnics (non-alcoholic beverages only), blankets and lawn chairs. To complete the movie-going experience a variety of concessions, including alcoholic beverages, will be available for purchase onsite.

Review: Mary Poppins 50th Anniversary DVD

I still remember when I attempted to "fly" like Mary Poppins with my trusty Mary Poppins umbrella ~ off the shed's roof at my parent's house. I was about 9 years old, I believe.

To this day, I wonder how I made it through childhood with my adventures constantly putting me in dangerous paths. I can only assume that the dear nanny was looking out for me that windy day.

We all have films we grew up watching and revisiting them bring that warm wave of nostalgia. Walt Disney, M. L. Travers and the new film, Saving Mr. Banks, brings the Disney classic Mary Poppins, back around as well with its 50th anniversary DVD. It's no surprise that the film comes out during the 50th anniversary year. The release of the two-pack special edition gives a few things the original did not contain.

As a fan of the nanny who flies in to take care of the family in 1910, I looked forward to the release of the DVD. Julie Andrews and Dick van Dyke are still enjoyable after all these years. This is a perfect example of how a movie becomes a classic. A story that spans time, values worth applying tour own lives, and extreme talent in the form of actors, lyricists, directors and choreographers, among others. The story, based on the works of P.L. Travers, is strong, flows seamlessly and stands the test of time.

The modern take on the movie consists of the other extras. The disc has a great sing-along, karaoke style for kids, bringing them into the story even more. The making of the film extra is enlightening with the behind-the-scenes-look. Blu Ray is also included in the two-pack, as well as a code so you can watch it on a smartphone.

Special commentary, interviews and conversations with and between costars, and song creators make the DVD a fun way to find out about the making of the movie. Deleted scenes are included, and it is digitally restored.

Bottom Line: Bringing Mary Poppins out of the vault to share with the nest generation can only be described as a scrumpdilicious idea.

Indianapolis Museum of Art (IMA) Summer Nights Film Series 2013 Lineup

Summer Nights Film Series is back for another great lineup of flicks to watch by starlight. It doesn't really get much better than that. You can take a picnic, blanket and your favorite movie monkey and enjoy a classic on the big screen.

Fridays, at the Indianapolis Museum of Art, 4000 Michigan Rd., black and white cult classics, thrillers and 1980's sing-out-loud with the soundtrack films are shown throughout the summer ~ outdoors under a blanket of stars.

What you can bring: Picnic blankets and lawn chairs, non-alcoholic beverages, food, candles, bug repellent and citronella candles. I like that costumes are welcome and encouraged, particularly with the '80s movies.

Don't bring: candles over 12 inches, pets (sorry), grills, weapon (including knives),cigars/cigarettes and alcohol (they sell it).

New this year - the film fans get to choose the final flick. John Hughes fans will love the choices. Follow the link and cast a vote for your favorite John Hughes film by visiting the IMA Blog. At the end of voting, Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club or Pretty in Pink will be screened on August 30. The John Hughes selection is presented in partnership with the LGBT Indianapolis Film Festival.

James Dean Film Festival February 21-23, 2013 in Downtown Indianapolis

Star.

Legend.

Icon.

James Dean, Indiana native and film icon, shook the movie industry with his rocket-launched career. Shooting to the top of popularity with just three silver-screen titles under his belt, the star crashed tragically to the ground with an early death at the age of 24.

The country mourned the loss of the Rebel without a Cause and his name has forever been etched in the "Cool" Hall of Fame alongside the likes of Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe and Humphrey Bogart. The intense, dramatic style of the quiet star earned the adoration of females of every age.

In his brief career, Dean starred in just three movies, but managed to capture the hearts and attention of the country before his life ended at the age of 24. These one-time showings will be presented digitally via video projector.

Film Schedule
