Theater Review: Beef and Boards: Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story

Maybe it is because I grew up hearing the Don McLean song, American Pie, but I have always had an interest in Buddy Holly. Now, Beef and Boards Dinner Theatre, Indianapolis, is featuring Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story on stage through Aug. 18.

Although McLean's lyrics were woven throughout more than a decade of disappointments, they all started because of that fateful night when Holly, an early pioneer of the Rock 'n' Roll genre, was killed at age 22, in a plane crash. The crash included other up-and-comers Ritchie Valens and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson, Jr.

Kyle Jurassic dons the iconic black-rimmed glasses portraying Holly with enthusiasm and deft ability. Drawing you in with his exuberance and pace. Jurassic matches Holly's style perfectly.

Valens is portrayed superbly by Edward LaCardo, while Chuck Caruso turns in an impressive performance as The Big Bopper.

Tarra Conner Jones and Joshue L.K. Patterson rock the audience as performers at the Apollo Theatre when Holly and The Crickets perform due to a misunderstanding that Holly and crew were African-American. D.J. Hipockets Duncan, portrayed by Indy favorite John Vessels, brings his radio listeners (and the audience) updates on Holly's life and career throughout the show.

In just under three years, Holly rocketed to the top of the charts, producing hit singles, albums and appearing in top television shows American Bandstand and The Ed Sullivan Show. Touring was added in to reach audiences across the nation. With a frantic pace and bitterly cold winter conditions, Holly chartered a plane to take himself, Valens and Bopper to the next location. Just after takeoff, the plane plunged into the frozen ground immediately killing all upon board.

Featuring almost two dozen of Holly's hits, including Peggy Sue and Rave On, Valens' La Bamba and Bopper's Chantilly Lace, this production is easy to get lost in. It is family friendly, which means it is safe to take your grandma and older children.

Bottom Line: Beef and Boards' Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story, with its powerful talented cast, is certain to become a summer hit.

Theater Review: Beef and Boards: Man from La Mancha

Beef and Boards, Indianapolis, steps out of its goody-two-shoe image to bring the dark comedic production of Man of La Mancha to the north-side stage. Also taking things up a notch the powers that be brought in Disney film talent Richard White. 

White grabs the audience's attention as soon as he steps onto the stage and doesn't let go. Smoothly doubling as both Miguel de Cervantes, author of Don Quijote de la Mancha, awaiting his fate in the depths of a castle prison, and Alonso Quijano, slipping from the book's pages into the dismal prison. Set during the Spanish Inquisition, Cervantes acts out the story of Quijano, whose greatest desire is to be knighted as Don Quixote, rescue lovely maidens and provide chivalrous services. Unfortunately, he has so become immersed in the life he wishes to lead, his grasp on reality has slipped more than a little. White's soothing baritone brings joy to "The Impossible Dream (The Quest)," providing goosebumps to more than one person, I am certain.

Sidekick and faithful servant, Sancho Panza, is portrayed delightfully by Eddie Curry, bringing comedic relief to the tale. In fact, this story line and character remind me of another Curry role many years ago ~ Shipwrecked ~ (read review here).

Bar wench/prostitute/rape victim Aldonza/Dulcinea is brought to life by Erica Hanrahan-Ball. As Quixote's love interest, Hanrahan-Ball tries too hard in the beginning, seeming to try to outdo her male counterpart, bringing a sharpness and unnecessary volume to early songs.

She shines brightest when she shares a softer side to the character, allowing her vocals and acting chops to complement the others on stage, rather than compete.

Portraying Innkeeper, and reluctant knight-bestower, Chuck Caruso brings a droll humor to the role, drawing the audience into his angst of being forced to play along with the delusions of White's Quixote. The pair were absolutely harmonious with their interactions.

Special Note: Costumes by Jill Kelly and set design by Michael Layton are to be applauded as well as the cast of talented performers.

Bottom Line: Beef and Boards breaks its own barriers with the production style and level of talent in its version of Man of la Mancha ~ well done.

White River Festival Sept. 1-14 2014

INDIANAPOLIS – The annual White River Festival, a two-week long celebration of the White River and the area’s land, wildlife, plants, streams and people, occurs September 1-14 with multiple events at venues and locations throughout central Indiana.

With the recent opening of new trails along the White River and Fall Creek, recreation encompasses all that the Indianapolis community is looking to do this year. The two-week celebration will feature the following events, most of which are free to the public, with more additions to the lineup in coming weeks:

The Cabaret at the Columbia Club Autumn Schedule 2014

One of the venues that deserves all the attention it can garner, and more attention and reviews than I (unfortunately) have the time to write, is The Cabaret at The Columbia Club.

The upcoming calendar allows a visit and review for a couple shows in the near future, thankfully, and I truly look forward to one of my favorite places in the world ~ right here in Indianapolis overlooking The Circle. If you haven't been; hold off.

Yes, I said wait. Just until the lights are up on the World's Largest Lighted Christmas Tree. At the beginning of the second half of a Cabaret performance, the curtains are opened and the gasp-aloud view will wow you and then ... you will get why I had you wait.

Okay, okay, don't wait.


But... definitely get tickets asap for the always-sold out holiday show as this year will be no different. The fundraiser performance (It is a non profit organization) is always worth the ticket price.

Kentucky Proud Wine & Chocolate Tasting at Stoneware June 19

I always like hearing about new ideas, especially those including wine and chocolate.

Stoneware, Louisville's premier pottery and stoneware makers, is showcasing Kentucky wine maker, Old 502 Winery, and chocolatiers Cellar Doors at its Third Thursday Lifestyle Series. The wine and chocolate pairing features products by two Kentucky Proud members.

The free event runs from 5-7 p.m., Thursday, June 19. The Lifestyle Series is designed to showcase authentic, local makers of products that complement the Stoneware products and lifestyle.

Attendees will have the opportunity to meet Logan Leet, owner of Old 502 Winery, and Erika Chavez, owner of Cellar Door Chocolates, who will explain their processes. Stoneware staff will be on hand to answer questions about products including their new Stoneware Wine Coolers that can be stored in the freezer and used to keep wine chilled.

Old 502 Winery makes its nine unique varieties of wine in downtown Louisville, using grapes sourced from Kentucky farmers.

Since 2007, Cellar Door Chocolates has been sourcing the finest ingredients and creating unique flavor combinations in handmade truffles, butter creams, sea salt caramels and small batch bourbon balls among other chocolate treats.

Stoneware has been hand making and hand painting pottery for the home, garden and kitchen for 199 years.

Theater Review: Beef and Boards Dinner Theatre: Anything Goes

There may not be a more appropriate title on stage or screen than Anything Goes, playing now at Beef and Boards Dinner Theatre, Indianapolis. The live and filmed productions, considered a Cole Porter classic, have been revamped, altered and rewritten beyond all recognition at some points. It has been made into a film twice with Bing Crosby (1936 and 1956) and is originally (and loosely) based on the book by P.G.Wodehouse and Guy Bolton.

Set in the golden days of glamour, this comedy takes place on a luxury ship. Timothy Ford steps into the lead role of Billy Crocker, the lovelorn broker following his ideal woman Hope Harcourt, played by Whitney Meyer.

Timothy Ford.... well, I couldn't quite place my finger on it, to be honest. He has a smooth charm that draws the audience in, perfect vocals and an air about him that seems as if you are watching an entertainer from a bygone era. Where had I had that sense before? Then, it hit me. Right here in this theater a few years back. Ford is the lead performer that swept up everyone's adoration with his umbrella while dancing in "Singing in the Rain." He also played one half of the lovable singing/dancing duo (with Curt Dale Clark) in "White Christmas."

Best pairing in vocals are Meyer and Ford in All Through the Night. Jeff Stockberger brings down the house with his comical rendition of "The Gypsy in Me." Portraying the affable Lord Evelyn Oakleigh Stockberger brings his popular brand of funny to the uptight fiance' with an inner wild side.

Deb Wims portrays the sassy, tough Reno Sweeney. Wims pairs up nicely with on-the-run Moonface Martin, played by Jack Milo. Milo's hang-dog expression brings the ahhh factor into play with his comic style.

The show is filled with dancing and familiar songs, such as "Anything Goes," "You're the Tops" and "I Get a Kick out of You."
Costumes (Jill Kelly), stage (Michael Layton) and choreography (Ron Morgan) all deserve extra applause this production to equal the amount of attention given when creating the show.

Bottom Line: Beef and Boards' Anything Goes brings a family friendly and colorful world of dancing, singing and comedy to the stage.

Once upon a Time Held at Butler Arts Fest April 4 Features Rita Kohn

Rita Kohn, Andrew Gavrin, Chris Katsaropoulos and Tracy Richardson come together for a spirited conversation, Once upon a Time,  about space, matter, energy & light.
Kohn, a local author, critic and all things regarding craft beer, writes "Beer Buzz" in NUVO, an Indianapolis publication and penned "True Brew," a book about Indiana beer.

The event takes place Fri., April 4, 6-7 p.m. at Eidson-Duckwall Recital Hall, on the Butler University campus.

Join physicist Andrew Gavrin, folklorist Rita Kohn and novelists Chris Katsaropoulos and Tracy Richardson on flights of imagination into real-world matters and go home energized to engage in Albert Einstein’s dictum:

“If you want your children to be intelligent, read them fairy tales. If you want them to be more intelligent, read them more fairy tales.”

INDIANAPOLIS – The Stutz Artists Association is recruiting volunteers for the annual Raymond James Stutz Artists Open House on April 25 and 26 at the historic Stutz Business Center.

Volunteers who work at least one three-hour shift will receive a free event T-shirt and admission to the two-day event. In addition to enjoying the art and atmosphere of one of the city’s premier cultural events, volunteers welcome and direct guests to artists’ studios.

During set-up, volunteers help put up tables, signage and trash boxes and escort food vendors and entertainers to their locations. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old and will be asked to attend a one-hour training session.

At the event, more than 70 artists will be in their studios showing work that ranges from paintings, drawings and photography, to sculpture, jewelry and furniture. Hours are from 5:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. on Friday, April 25 and from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 26, at the Stutz Business Center at 10th Street and Capitol Avenue downtown.

Admission is $15 at the gate and $10 in advance at select Old National Bank branches. Ticket proceeds support the Stutz Residency Program, which provides free studio space and utilities for emerging local artists.

Theater Review: Beef and Boards Dinner Theatre: Lend Me a Tenor

Opening its 41st season (full schedule here) Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre, Indianapolis, follows its record-setting production of "Les Miserables" with "Lend Me a Tenor" by Ken Ludwig. The Tony-Award winning farce is in its 25th year of successful stage productions. 

Set in Cleveland, 1934, the opera lovers of the Midwestern town are ready to hear the world-famous Italian tenor Tito Merelli (Craig Underwood) sing lead in "Otello." 

Underwood's vocals alone would earn the audience's admiration, but his comedic timing and connection with his stage wife, Maria (played by Jill Kelly) sealed the deal. Kelly portrays the over-the-top stereotypical Italian wife with enthusiasm and matched with Underwood's energy and timing.

Merelli's late arrival sets the story line as he is accidentally overdosed by Max (David Schmittou) who is left to tend the temperamental artist. Believing he has killed the star, Max dons makeup and costume and takes the stage in Merelli's place. Portraying the boring, straight-man role, Schmittou surprises the audience when he displays his operatic vocals.

As local female fans chase the faux tenor, Saunders, (Eddie Curry), aids in the zany coverup. Curry brings in the strongest performance as the agitated, desperate-to-save-his-livelihood GM of the opera company. As father of Max's fiance, Maggie (Erin West), and responsible for the star's safekeeping, Max sputters, sweats and attempts to strangle Merelli with pure conviction.

West plays the star-struck fan thwarted by Otello costar Diana (Erin Cohenhour) and Julia (Gerri Weagraff), Maggie's aunt. The tenor awakens and the ladies chase, along with Maria and several other characters.

Adding to the wacky play is Jeff Stockberger as the also-star-struck bellhop. Stockberger's tall frame in a bellhop uniform and cap is the perfect touch to this fun romp through a hotel room.

Bottom Line: Beef and Boards' Lend Me a Tenor opens its 41st season with excellent comedic timing.

Theater Review: Beef and Boards Dinner Theatre: A Beef and Boards Christmas 2013

Beef and Boards Dinner Theatre, Indianapolis, ends its 40th year with the annual Christmas proffering, Kenny Shepard and Deb Wims cohost the traditional holiday production A Beef and Boards Christmas.

With a few changes in the regular cast, Beef & Boards Orchestra takes the stage throughout the entire production bringing them the attention well-deserved. “Winter Wonderland” and “Carol of the Bells” stand out as they are performed by the seven-piece orchestra, led by Kristy Templet. It would be simpler to say the orchestra was the narrator of the production, performing 30 numbers during the holiday show, never leaving the stage.
New this year is the best Santa Claus I have witnessed on the B&B ~ or any Indianapolis ~ stage. I like to go into these things without too much prior knowledge, in keeping with the rest of the audience. Once I took note of the stage presence and voice of this particular Kris Kringle, I looked up the performer's name.

Jeff Angel.

Seriously, Angel is his last name and he is playing the angel of good children throughout the world. And doing it extremely well. His booming voice and bouncy nature draw the adults and children forward in their seats to catch every word he speaks. During intermission Santa captures the wonderland moment with children at a 'photo with Santa' area. When not donning red velvet and whiskers, Angel can also be found at TOTS, Footlite Musicals and other area stages. Hopefully he will return to this stage sans the Christmas gear in the Beef and Boards 2014 season schedule.

Well known carols are included again this year with notables including, "I'll Be Home for Christmas," reminding us that everyone isn't  home this year.

Peter Scharbrough (Les Mis) is delightful mixing it up with The Grinch. Frosty dances across the brand-new setting, complete with a cozy home feeling, designed by Michael Layton.

Bottom Line: A Beef and Boards Christmas offers family friendly holiday fun, flying reindeer and an unbeatable Santa Claus.

It's A Wonderful Life on Big Screen and Silent Auction at IMAX December 5 for $6

Some things mean Christmas more than others. It's A Wonderful Life is one those thigns. Annually an original Christmas movie is shown in Indianapolis the first week of December. Benefiting Indianapolis Downtown Beautification, the film and silent auction beforehand will be held at Indiana State Museum's IMAX, 650 W. Washington St., Indianapolis.

Tickets ($6) are available by clicking here or at the door the evening of the event, Thursday, Dec. 5. The silent auction begins at 5 p.m. and runs through 6:15 p.m. Cash and checks are accepted for the items. Silent auction items include gift certificates to some of downtown's best restaurants, hotels, attractions and more. 

 The classic film begins screening at 6:30 p.m. Seating is limited and expected to sell out. All contributions go to Indianapolis Downtown Beautification.

L. S. Ayres' Cherub Arrives in Indianapolis for Christmas 2013 Season

Below is the tale of the famous L.S. Ayres cherub, which arrives annually to oversee shoppers during the holiday season. No one ever sees the cherub arrive, but, just like Santa Claus, you can depend on catching sight of him every year.

It was 1946. World War II had just ended and thousands returned home from military service. Among them, Virginia Holmes--a prize-winning commercial artist--came back to Indianapolis and started her career in the advertising department at L.S. Ayres, a downtown department store. When it came time to compose the 1946 holiday catalog, merchandise was still in short supply, so Holmes created whimsical cherubs to fill the somewhat empty pages. The cherubs captured hearts and began an Indianapolis holiday tradition that continues today.

Customer response to the cherubs was so great, Ayres perpetuated their appearance in its 1947 holiday advertising. It was Ayres’ 75th Anniversary, and that called for a special addition to their holiday celebration plans. Ayres commissioned nationally recognized Indianapolis sculptor and Herron School of Art instructor, David Rubins to create a bronze cherub for the store’s landmark clock, located on the outside of their building on the corner of Washington and Meridian streets.

Cherub Keeps WatchAs the story is told, the whimsical Cherub mysteriously appeared atop the clock on Thanksgiving Eve 1947 to keep a watchful eye on the holiday shoppers (beginning Thursday, Nov. 28) until Santa took over on Christmas Eve. In the 66 years since, thousands have had the pleasure of seeing the Cherub perched atop the famous clock each holiday season. This powerful tradition lives in the hearts and minds and memories of a city and its grateful citizens.

The May Department Store Co. purchased L.S. Ayres in 1986 and, in 1992, moved the Cherub to its headquarters in St. Louis. There was tremendous public outcry when the Cherub did not appear that holiday season. So May donated the Cherub to the City of Indianapolis and in 1994 Indianapolis Downtown, Inc. became the Cherub’s legal guardian.

So keep an eye out… the Cherub will be appearing downtown very soon ~
