Wine Review: Wine Pairing ~ Francis Ford Coppola Wine and Halloween Candy

Okay, let’s say that you like wine.

I mean realllllly like wine.

And … Halloween is around the corner.

Or … just passed by.

You will, or have done, the dutiful (and fun) act of handing out treats to the goblins, princesses and super heroes of the neighborhood. Or, perhaps, your own child went a-hunting for treats on the eve of ghouls.

Either way ~ you have an abundance of candy leftover, or not handed out yet.

Sitting temptingly in a plastic pumpkin, giant holiday bucket or bag.

Chocolate coated most likely.

Wine snobs aside (as far away as possible, please), you have a craving.

Chocolate and wine.

There’s no spectacular, over-the-top expensive, chocolate in the house and you are craving a glass of vino

with a little bit of chocolate.

You eyeball the plastic pumpkin with a handle sitting by the front door. And your mind begins to whirl…

What if …

What if you take the wine and drink it with the oh-so-everyday Halloween candy? Will the wine

 aficionados come out the woodwork ~ like so many G-Men ~ ready to gun you down with snarky

 remarks and high-browed insults about points, dissing you about your lack of palate and culture?

Maybe.

Probably.

But, honestly, who cares about them anyway? Seriously, do they buy your wine (or chocolate)? Do they

sit at your dinner table and compliment your cooking?

No? I didn't think so.

So … their opinion truly does not matter in this case. Or, maybe, in any case ~ but that is a whole other

discussion.

The folks at Francis Ford Coppola Winery (yes, the Godfather movie director guy) invited me, no asked me ~ nay dared me ~ to do a wine pairing. A wine pairing of their wines with ... Halloween candy. I guess you could say they gave me an offer I couldn't refuse.

Why?

I would like to think it is because they believe I am an expert in these matters. But I know it’s more likely they have figured out I am willing to do what others won’t. So, I give you my findings and preferences of wine and leftover trick-or-treat candy.

Diamond Collection Chardonnay

Okay, anyone who follows me at all is aware of my preference for Reisling, Traminette and ~ well, pretty
much any white other than Chardonnay. However, it is what they sent and they do it better than the majority which explains their taking Best in Show at the 2012 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition.

With its apple and caramel-vanilla flavors, the Chard goes best with ghoulish candies like Payday, peanut butter kisses and Reese's.

Diamond Red Blend

This blend of Zinfandel/Syrah/Cabernet/Petite Syrah/Merlot gets all fruity on you, reminding me of the communion grape juice sipped in church as a child. I like blends, even defending them as the occasion requires. A great find since we are tasting candy with the wine, which actually has a deeper layer of toasted oak and hearty back-end flavor.

The second layer is what captured my attention and I went with Almond Joy bars with this one, along with Hershey's candy bars. Of the three, this was the one I felt was my least favorite. Not of the wine, it was quite good. I just wasn't wild about the candy pairing. Perhaps it would have paired better with chocolate-covered peanuts.

Diamond Collection Claret

This Bordeaux varietal blend of Cabernet/Petite Verdot/Cab Franc/Malbec is rich with espresso and anise, along with a touch of cocoa.

This balanced wine (and Coppola's signature wine) cozies up perfectly with Halloween treats. My favorite pairing is any caramel goody covered in chocolate. I went with Milkduds and Twix and was quite pleased with the match. My favorite of the three pairing combinations, this wine (in my opinion) would go with almost anything or nothing ~

4th Annual Midtown Home Tour November 9-10, 2013

The Midtown Home Tour 2013 will take place Saturday, Nov. 9 and Sunday, Nov. 10 from 11 am-5 pm.

Giving a glimpse inside some of Indianapolis' oldest homes, the tour also gives back to its community.  As five homes, decorated for the holidays, are showcased each year, decorating tips are given for your own home. Al proceeds are returned to the historic neighborhood to maintain the unique homes.

Colts Tailgate 8th Annual Fundraiser November 10

*Press Release* Goelzer Investment Management is hosting its 8th annual Colts Tailgate event Sunday, November 10. at Hurst Bean Field, donating 35,000 meals to Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana. The Indianapolis investment company will donate more than three skids of NK Hurst beans to Gleaners Food Bank. The donation will generate 35,000 meals for disadvantaged individuals in Indianapolis and help kick off the holiday season of giving. The annual event is being held from 11:00 am-1 pm at the Hurst Bean Field parking lot, located directly across from Lucas Oil Stadium.

Goelzer Investment Management has donated 250,000 meals to Hoosiers in need. To contribute to the food donation to Gleaners, the firm invites Colts fans to stop by Hurst Bean Field prior to the Colts game to drop off canned food. Drop boxes will be located at the entrance areas of the parking lot.

Why beans? A bean dinner is high in complex carbohydrates, protein and dietary fiber, helping to satisfy hunger because it is absorbed slowly. Beans are also high in calcium, iron, folate, and potassium.

“Hundreds of thousands of Hoosier families are still struggling to put food on their tables,” said Cindy Hubert, president and CEO of Gleaners. “In fact, our emergency food distribution has doubled since the economic crisis in 2008. In our 21-county service area in central and southeastern Indiana, 319,450 of our neighbors are hungry and one in five is a child.”

Oh my... it is that time again.

The time when the air grows chilly, leaves turn and fireplaces are lit.

In short ~ Autumn.

Along with the change of season comes thoughts of Halloween and all it entails: parties, costumes and fun. Fun even trickles down to food and drinks.

Once again I have invited experts in the world of spirits, wine and beer, including sommeliers, mixologists, restaurants, pubs, distillers and manufacturers to send their Halloween-inspired cocktails.

The response was swift with recipes of devilish brews, scary shots and orange concoctions dedicated to the holiday of fear and frivolity. The list was compiled and narrowed down to the ones most in spirit with the holiday and representing uniqueness, great taste and visual appeal.

I present to you the...

Top 10 Halloween Inspired Cocktails 2013

Recipe: Mix 6 oz Cascade Ice Orange Mango with 1 oz of orange vodka and 2 oz of whipped cream-flavored vodka. Strain and pour into martini glass.

Inspiration: I drew on my memories from my childhood when my sister and I went to Halloween parties which usually included a fun game of Bobbing for Apples ~ thus Bourbon for Apples was born.

Recipe: Mix 3 TB of Apple Complex Simple Syrup, 1 full shot of Four Roses Yellow Label Bourbon, 3 oz Cava, Float a garnish of Apple and Cherry Serve in a Champagne flute rimmed with equal parts pumpkin spice and sugar. (Complex Simple Syrup: Sugar, Water, Apple Juice, Grann

Inspiration: With its sequel approaching ~ the most popular Halloween costume this year is sure to be Ron Burgundy of Anchorman (2004) fame.

Recipe: 1½ oz Sobieski Cytron Vodka, ½ oz fresh lime juice, ½ oz pomegranate juice. Shake ingredients in cocktail shaker with ice. Strain into a sugar rimmed martini glass. Garnish with orange.

Recipe: 2 parts Jacob’s Ghost White Whiskey, 1 part John DeKuyper & Sons O3 Liqueur (orange liqueur), 1 part white cranberry juice, ½ part fresh lime juice. Build all ingredients over ice in a mixing glass, shake and strain into a chilled glass. Garnish with cherries.

Recipe: 1½ parts Bärenjäger Honey & Bourbon infused with cinnamon*, ¾ part fresh lemon juice, 1 part apple cider. Shake all ingredients with ice. Strain into a chilled martini glass. *Infuse Bärenjäger Honey & Bourbon-add 4 cinnamon sticks to 1 L of Bärenjäger Honey & Bourbon 24 hours before use.

Recipe:  Muddle frozen cherries with 1 tsp mulling spices. Pour 3 oz Oliver Zinfandel 2010, 1 oz orange juice, and 1 oz cranberry cocktail juice over cherries. Stir and pour over ice.

Inspiration: I don’t think glamour ever dies. It certainly never goes out of style. But don’t let all that glamour fool you. This drink has a dark side, I told you it was sexy.
Recipe: 1 shot /45 ml /1 ½ fl oz tequila repasado, 1 pony shot/30 ml/1 fl oz Campari, ½ pony shot/15 ml /½ fl oz Santa Maria al Monte amaro or other herbaceous amaro, 2 dashes Scrappy's cardamom bitters, 1 orange twist, as garnish. Combine tequila, Campari, amaro and bitters in a mixing glass half-filled with ice. Gently stir until chilled and properly diluted, about 20 seconds. Julep strain into a chilled coupe or cocktail glass. Garnish with an orange twist, its oil expressed onto the surface and rubbed onto the rim of the drink then dropped on top, peel side up. Makes 1.

(8) Pumpkin Patch Julep

Inspiration: Where the Great Pumpkin is found every Halloween.
Recipe: 2 oz Alibi American Whiskey, 1.5 oz homemade pumpkin butter (see below recipe), 1/2 oz orgeat syrup, 1/2 oz fresh lemon juice. Shake vigorously with ice and strain into chilled cocktail glass or hollowed pumpkin. Garnish with a slice of pear, a cinnamon stick and a sprinkle of nutmeg. Pumpkin Butter: makes 2 pints3-4 pound sugar pumpkin (aka pie pumpkin), 1 chopped sweet apple, skins removed, 3/4 cup demerara sugar (sugar in the raw), 4 tablespoons real maple syrup (not maple-flavored syrup!), 1/2 tsp ground ginger, 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg, 1/2 tsp cloves, 2 tsp cinnamon, 1 tsp fresh lemon juice, 1/2 tsp sea salt. Cut stem off pumpkin and slice lengthwise. Clean out inside of pumpkin and brush with neutral oil (canola). Roast pumpkin facedown in preheated oven at 350F for approximately 45-55 min. Let cool for 10 minutes and remove skin with spoon. Add pumpkin meat, apple, sugar, maple syrup, and spices into blender. Blend until smooth. Spoon mixture into medium sized pot. Make sure there is enough room to top of pot for boiling. Cover with lid and prop open a bit with wooden spoon so that steam can escape. Over med-high heat, bring to a low boil. Reduce to low-med heat and cook for 10 minutes until mixture reaches desired thickness. Cool completely and stir in lemon juice and salt.

Recipe: 2 oz. Cabo Diablo, ¾ oz. cherry liqueur ~  Build in a mixing glass, add ice and stir. Garnish with colored salt rim.

Inspiration: This cocktail honors the pumpkin, what we believe is one of the most iconic symbols of Halloween. For a holiday surrounded by pumpkin-spiced everything (lattes, cakes, soups and even sausage) it's a wonder pumpkin cocktails aren't the No. 1 drink. We hope this cocktail changes that.
Recipe: 2 oz Partida Reposado Tequila, 1 oz fresh lime juice, splash of pumpkin puree, sesame seeds, lime wedge: Rim a cocktail glass with lime juice and sesame seeds. Mix ingredients well in a shaker with ice. Strain into cocktail glass. Garnish with a lime wedge.

Dance Kaleidoscope Holds Fundraiser December 7

*Press release* Dance Kaleidoscope is pleased to announce Raymond Leppard and Marianne W. Tobias will play a piano concert with DK dancers Dec. 7. The concert will take place at Schrott Center for the Arts, located at Butler University, Indianapolis.

Performances will include Ancient Airs and Dances (Respighi), Gymnopedies (Satie) and Mother Goose Suite (Ravel). Leppard and Tobias will each play a grand piano as dancers perform.

Both Leppard and Tobias have enjoyed illustrious musical careers around the world and in Indianapolis with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra.

One of the most respected international conductors of his time, Leppard has conducted nearly every major orchestra in the world, including the New York Philharmonic, the English Chamber Orchestra and the Israel Philharmonic. His last position before retiring was as conductor for ISO. He is also an accomplished pianist and composer, including film scores.

Tobias has enjoyed a fascinating multi-faceted career. She is a native of Indianapolis who graduated cum laude from Harvard University and holds an artist diploma from Longy Conservatory of Music of Bard College. While in the Boston area, she worked for the famed chef Julia Child at WGBH. In Minneapolis, she worked as an assistant to Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Dominick Argento and taught at the University of Minnesota and St. Paul Academy and Summit School. In 1986, Tobias returned to Indianapolis and became the resident program annotator for the ISO, as well as serving on its board of directors.

Hyatt’s Christmas in the Kitchen Dec. 12, 2013 ~ Benefiting Indiana Children's Wish Fund

Last year (2012) I was invited to attend Hyatt Regency's Downtown annual event called Christmas in the Kitchen.

What? Yes, in the kitchen. At the Hyatt downtown.

Since I love experiencing something new, I went.

In short...wow.

It was too much fun just strolling about in an evening dress sampling numerous wines, entrees, desserts, cocktails, and bumping into people I knew and didn't. A glass of wine here, lamb chops there, and something gooey and chocolate to nibble while chatting with the chefs and other attendees. The carols being played kept the spirit of the holidays in the air, along with goodwill by everyone there for a great cause.

I will return this year, and hope anyone considering giving to a great cause, will join me at this annual event to benefit Indiana's children.

Indianapolis’ premier holiday event, Hyatt’s Christmas in the Kitchen, returns to benefit Indiana Children’s Wish Fund and grant special Christmas wishes for Indiana Wish children. The holiday food extravaganza takes place Dec. 12 in Hyatt Regency’s main kitchen and ballroom at 6:30 p.m.

Guests will enjoy a wide assortment of delicious appetizers, entrees, desserts, famous “Polar Bear” drinks, wine and spirits. All of the culinary creations, crafted by Executive Chef John Pivar and his culinary team, will be prepared right in front of the guests in the Hyatt kitchen.

A holiday raffle will also be held to raise money for Indiana Children’s Wish Fund. Festive live holiday music will be provided throughout the evening. Festive holiday gingerbread houses (made with love by Wish children) will be on display in the Hyatt kitchen and will be auctioned off to raise money for special Christmas wishes.

Individual tickets are $125 (admittance into the event with seating) or $100 per person (admittance into the event without seating). They are almost sold out, so get them quickly.

Indiana Children’s Wish Fund, established in 1984, grants wishes to Indiana children, ages 3-18, who suffer from a life-threatening illness. Wishes include trips to Disney, shopping sprees, meeting celebrities, family vacations and home computers. To date, the organization has granted over 3,000 wishes to Indiana children.

Children's Museum Haunted House 2013

Step into a time machine and literally disappear into Halloweens of years past at the nation’s oldest continually-operated haunted house, The Children's Museum, Indianapolis.

Time Warp: 50 Years of Fear, runs through Oct. 31.

Haunted House visitors watch as family and friends appear to disappear into a terrifying 3-D Time Warp created by The Children’s Museum Guild (its largest fundraiser of the year). Upon entering, the spinning tunnel of terror whisks visitors back five “dead’cades to explore 50 years of pop culture through a creepy, three dimension lens. The first stop is 1964’s Upside Down Room. You’ll be amazed at how your hair stays in place as you ‘walk’ upside down on the ceiling.

Step carefully on to the moon (circa 1968) as special effects make it appear as though you might fall into a deep crater or get splattered with lava.

"The addition of 3-D effects this year has taken our Haunted House to the next level. Visitors will see things literally popping off the walls and floating in mid-air. You might even see a hole in the floor ... but is it really there?" asked Haunted House “Head Witch” Carol Clark.


Get your groove on in the retro Haunted Hangout, a 1970s inspired basement that features all of the iconic 70s memorabilia you remember including a console TV, shag carpet and memorable pop culture posters! As guests move through time they will experience the 1977 Star Wars movie’s Creepy Cantina. Join the band, grab a beverage and spend time with your favorite Star Wars characters.

Visitors move from the 1970s into the '80s and enter the Gruesome Game Room. Watch your step as Pac Man ghosts gobble at your feet until it is “Game Over!” Then you step inside a life-size, pinball machine zig zagging to escape a giant hand that reaches out of the walls, through lightning bolts and floating asteroids.

The 1980s continue with a trip through a mummified mausoleum on the way to the Zombie Zone, a tribute to the iconic 1983Thriller video. Move into the 90s Wicked World Web and dodge a six foot scary spider that stalks a computer graveyard causing people to ‘look out’ or get caught in its corded web of creepiness on the way to Y-2 Kaos.

Witness monster movie magic up close in a separate exhibit within the museum called Hollywood Haunts. The Addams Family and Indy’s own Sammy Terry welcome you to see real props and costumes from some of Hollywood’s most popular sci-fi, horror, and adventure movies. The 2013 Haunted House will offer something for everyone in terms of the level of fear. In addition to IPL’s Lights-on Hours and Defender Direct’s Frightening Hours, there is a new experience for those seeking a higher level of horror. On Friday nights only, William’s Comfort Air’s Xtreme Scream! hours offer the ultimate mind/body, fright experience in a psychological thriller sort of way. Dance Kaleidoscope 2013-2014 Season

David Hochoy's Indianapolis-based dance troupe, Dance Kaleidoscope (DK) opens its 2013-2014 season October 24-27.

Long Island Medium's Theresa Caputo Live in Indianapolis October 13

Theresa Caputo, the fast-talking, pint-sized, psychic medium star of the hit TLC show, Long Island Medium, will be appearing live at The Murat Theatre at Old National Centre in Indianapolis Sunday, October 13.

The wise-cracking New Yorker channels people who have passed over to the other side. Caputo's self-deprecating humour and dead-on (pardon the pun) accuracy has earned her millions of fans worldwide. Interactive readings throughout the show will be peppered with tales of the personal journey of being just "a normal Long Island housewife" who happens to chat with dead folks.

The highly-rated show launched its 4th season on May 12 and continues with its original format of following the medium as she spends a normal day. Whether seeing clients, running errands or spending quality time with her husband of 22 years, Larry, or their two children, Larry Jr., and Victoria.

Without an off switch, the spirits pop in and out as the feisty blonde visits her local car mechanic, manicurist or cashier at the bagel shop. Introducing herself as a messenger from their loved ones, Caputo relays in the stereotypical Long Island accent, wisdom, helpful words of comfort and amusing anecdotes.

Not since John Edwards, the handsome New Yorker who shared his similar abilities on Crossing Over, has there been such a popular messenger of tales from the dark side. Arts for Learning Chocolate Fest 2013 Includes Beer and Wine

The Indiana affiliate of Young Audiences brings in the top choices for chocolate, once again. From chocolate beer and wine to fortune cookies dipped in chocolate, it's all there for you.

Now, I personally have never had chocolate beer. You know I am a wine drinker and have, indeed, sipped some chocovino in my time.

However.... the idea of my favorite food group (chocolate) introduced in a growler of suds is intriguing. Would love to hear from any of you who have tested this flavour of Sun King Brewing Company called Wee Mac.

Benefiting Arts for Learning, the Indiana affiliate of Young Audiences, Chocolate Fest 2013 includes a host of chefs, chocolatiers, bakers and restaurateurs. In addition to desserts, the event will also offer arts activities for children and performances featuring Arts for Learning professional teaching artists.

The 6th annual “Gotta Go Ultimate Gift Guide” is quickly coming upon us, sharing holiday and Christmas gift ideas.

As Indy Style's Personal Lifestyle Adviser, appearing regularly on the popular show, this year's winning selections will be featured by me on Indy Style television program on WISH TV 8 (CBS) December 10, 2013. Wishtv.com/indy-style

The chosen items will be given away to viewers. Entries must include two of each entry, one for judging purposes and one for presentation on television (if selected).

December 3  is this year's deadline for entries. The list of winners (with image and website) will be published online at GottaGo.us during the week of December 10, 2013.

Entries will, once again, be selected by a three-judge panel.

Those submitting winning entries will be notified by the email address sent with the entry. A link to the online post and television segment will be sent by email.

Purchasing and contact information should be included with entry, along with bio of product and company. Images should be submitted via email. A hi-res image (or two) of each entry must be included via email with information.

Theater Review: Beef and Boards Les Miserables

I do not think it is out of line to say Les Miserables has been the most anticipated production on the Beef and Boards Dinner Theatre's 2013 lineup. Some hoping it would be great, others certain it would not be.

"How possibly," the naysayers whispered, "could a small stage be used in such an epic production?" "Where will they find the talent to back up the vocal needs of this beloved tale?"

Well, I am here to state they pulled it off and not by a small margin.

Bringing in no fewer than four Broadway performers, a television actress and touring performers, the Indianapolis theater left nothing to chance for the Victor Hugo tale.

Starring as the ex-convict who breaks parole, Jean Valjean, is Gregg Goodbrod. The Broadway performer set the standard at a peak with his weary, disillusioned-with-life, thief-turned-philanthropist Valjean. From the onset with the prison scene to the ending on his deathbed, Goodbrod brings it ~ whether in the tenderest of moments, during the anguish of loneliness or when strength was needed ~ he brings it every time. His vocal talent is best demonstrated in, well, pretty much every single song, but Who am I brought the audience to rapt attention.

Anyone who has ever had the pleasure of watching Sarah Hund in action knows her instrumental, vocal and comedic talents are without bounds. Watching her portray Fantine, the single mother cast aside who turns to self-degradation for money in order to save her daughter, and perform I Dreamed a Dream, is mesmerizing.

To review the television and stage actress in a dramatic role is beyond satisfying ~ it's pure bliss. A complete talent and more than a triple threat, Hund is a chameleon, evolving into each character ~ siren, goofball, nerd, ditz, sophisticate and, now, courageous street prostitute ~ with an ease that is bewitching.

Bringing comedic relief, in a huge way, are Annie Edgerton and Doug Stark as Innkepers M & Mme. Thenardier. Picking pockets, slinging bad brew and pulling every dirty trick possible are all on the resume of this loathsome ~ yet laughable ~ pair.
Javert, the holier-than-thou police inspector who tracks Valjean with a vengeance. is portrayed impeccably by Joe Tokarz. Tokarz' version of Javert's suicide is seamless, as are his vocals throughout.

There is not enough room, unfortunately, to mention every cast member, although they each truly deserve a mention.

My prediction is B&B will need to add performances for this production.
The reason?
The cast. It is as strong, polished and interwoven as it can possibly get outside of the lights of Broadway.

Bottom Line: If you have wondered about Beef and Boards' version of Les Miz, or you've not been in a long while, or ever ~ let me reassure you. This is the strongest cast and most polished performance I have seen at this venue in the seven years I have reviewed the Indianapolis theater scene.

Think you (or your mixologist) has the best recipe for a cocktail inspired by Halloween? I will feature Halloween-inspired cocktails in Gotta Go, giving readers the Top Ten best entries to enjoy and create in the 2nd annual Top 10 Best Halloween Cocktails 2013.
