Theater Review: Theatre on the Square (TOTS): A Christmas Survival

So many delightful, and deserving, events to attend and performances to review... in that vein, an opportunity has presented itself to me. A gentleman in the world of theater for whom I have much respect has transplanted from New York City to his hometown of Indianapolis and offered to relieve me of some of the numerous reviews worthy of attention in town.

Without further ado ~ enter a review by John Simmons ...

A Christmas Survival Guide has been a staple of many Christmases Past but, even if you’ve seen the show before, you haven’t seen the version now being performed at Theatre On The Square’s intimate, cabaret-style Stage 2 Theater. The TOTS’ creative team has refurbished this holiday chestnut with an assortment of up-to-the-minute pop culture references, well-placed four-letter words and sexy double entendres.

How much a particular sketch tickles your funny bone will, of course, depend on your particular brand of humor. Some standouts include: a hyper-sexed rendition of ‘Baby, It’s Cold Outside’ (with and Eric Brockett); a hilariously hyper-frenzied rendition of ‘Sleigh Ride’ (Anna, Shauna Smith and singing standout Josiah McCruistion); Mrs. Claus (Eric, in drag and employing an accent of undetermined origin) complaining about being neglected by her husband, especially on Christmas Eve; a lonely young woman (Gabby Niehaus) hitting up a department store Santa (Josiah) for a date to the office Christmas party; and a lusty Saint Nick himself (Josiah) extolling the virtues of being ‘the man with the bag’ when attracting the ladies.

Pet owners, in particular, will appreciate the holiday gift exchange between a dog, a cat and their human (Anna, Eric and Josiah). Those who’ve seen the show undoubtedly have favorites of their own (as will you).

The humor is broad and adults only, and some sketches work better than others. A Christmas Carol, it’s not. A Christmas Guide’s laughs also work best when they are shared with others. So, this holiday season – if you and your friends are looking for something more naughty than nice – why not trot down to TOTS and spend an evening with A Christmas Guide’s lively cast (ably assisted by Stage Manager and Cast Member Nikki Sayer and skilled piano man Levi Burke) in ushering in some Yuletide cheer?

The show’s setup is simple: the play’s characters are reading chapters from Dr. Holly’s self-help book, A Christmas Survival Guide, with pre-recorded voice overs letting the audience in on the advice being read. There’s no real story line, but a series of musical comedy sketches (with many offering new takes on classic Christmas songs) about maintaining a brave face when celebrating Christmas in the modern age.

Wanted: 7th Annual Ultimate Gift Guide 2014 Submissions Now Being Accepted

The 7th annual “Gotta Go Ultimate Gift Guide” is quickly coming upon us, with a shorter
turnaround time available, due to requests. I realize this is tight on time, however, viewers are requesting an earlier feature of the gifts to stay in line with their shopping habits.

The popular event ~ sharing the best holiday and Christmas gift ideas ~ will be televised again this year. I have switched from Fine-living Adviser on Indy Style to be the Travel & Leisure Adviser for Fox 59 Morning News Show. I will showcase winners on the program Thanksgiving morning, November 27 at 9:10 a.m.

Entries must include two of each entry, one for judging purposes and one for presentation on television (if selected).

November 24, 2014 is this year's deadline for entries. The list of winners (with image and website) will be published online at GottaGo.us during the week of November 27, 2014.

Entries will, once again, be selected by a three-judge panel.

Those submitting winning entries will be notified by the email address sent with the entry.

Purchasing and contact information should be included with entry, along with bio of product and company. Images should also be submitted via email. A hi-res image (or two) of each entry must be included via email with information in case needed for the television show.

NEW THIS YEAR ~

All gifts will be in a general category as each year has seen a wide variety of items.

However, also new this year: ALL items will be accepted, including toys, children, stocking stuffers, books, food, wine/spirits, jewelry, clothing, et al. Whatever you can think of  ~ with the following exceptions:
No pornographic, fundraiser, political, religious, sexual, illegal, or hate items will be accepted.

Rules and tips: 

• Entries must be EXACTLY as the consumer would purchase ~ size, package everything. Ex. gift packs, gift baskets, monthly club, size, etc.

• Submissions must include 2 (two) of each item: 1 (one) for judging and 1 (one) for presentation on television (if selected).

• PR firms may submit for as many clients as they wish.

• Only three different items may be submitted per product company.

• Food items are allowed again.

• Alcohol and alcohol gift sets will be accepted again this year.

• Perishables are accepted, but please send to arrive the day before judging for best presentation.

• Children and pet items are being accepted again this year.

• Information for purchasing must be included (website, retail locations, etc.).

• MSRP must be included.

• Include social media information (Twittter, Facebook) in email for inclusion on website post.

• No pornographic, fundraiser, political, religious, sexual, illegal, or hate items will be accepted.

• Entries must be received by 6 p.m. Monday, November, 24, 2014.

• Due to the quantity of items received annually, all items cannot be featured and will be chosen by judges.

Buck Creek Players 2014-2015 Season Includes Champs, Ghosts and A Few Good Men

Besides the plays I performed in (including portraying Tiny Tim at the age of 12), throughout middle and high school my first live theater experience was at a community theater. Immediately hooked on this way of immersing myself into a story, I was forever hooked on live stage performances.

Buck Creek Players' 2014-2015 season has drama, comedy and holiday spirit to please everyone. And, being located near Buck Creek Winery is an added bonus ~

No, I didn't write a review back then, I simply sat enthralled at the tale coming to life before my young eyes. The story has remained dear to me ~ Harvey. Lighting, shadows and talented performers created the six-foot, three-and-one-half-inch tall pooka that looked like a rabbit with a protective and quirky attitude.

Community theaters are a wonderful addition to any town, providing a creative outlet for those with "day jobs," working on progressing to the big leagues and people who want to give back in their own way. I encourage everyone to support community theaters by attending at least one performance throughout the upcoming season. Check back here for theater reviews.

This intimate masterpiece and dark comedy examines health care and end-of-life issues at a cancer hospital. June 5-21, 2015

An eclectic group of six mid-pubescent children vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves. At least the losers get a juice box.

July 31-August 2, 2015

Quickly becoming an audience favorite, the Play-A-Part Fundraisers separate themselves from traditional productions in that all roles are "won" through an online silent auction with no required auditions. Veteran musical theater performers join first-timers to give this classic musical a comedic twist much like The Carol Burnett Show.

Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre 2015 Season Lineup Includes Odd, Crazy, Kooky and Drowsy

Beef and Boards Dinner Theatre opens its 2015 season with a classic romp with roommates of polar opposite personalities carrying through the year with music, adventure and holiday shows.

Indianapolis stage favorites Eddie Curry and Jeff Stockberger will team up for The Odd Couple. Check back here for a review as I do not plan on missing that one.

The classic South Pacific is also included with the year's offerings, reminding us love will always find a way. The lovable Addams family characters will creep across the stage and the northside theater will bring its traditional holiday show to round out the season.

The Odd Couple
Dec. 28 – Feb. 2, 2015

Two Beef & Boards favorites will star in this tale of mismatched roomates, with Jeff Stockberger as the easygoing Oscar Madison and Eddie Curry as the uptight Felix Ungar, who moves in with Oscar after his marriage falls apart.

Crazy For You

Feb. 6 – March 30

The stage is filled with all things Gershwin as it presents the story centering around Bobby Child, who is sent to Nevada to foreclose on a theatre. When he falls in love with the local postmistress, he devises a plan to save the theatre. Songs include “I’ve Got Rhythm,” “Someone to Watch Over Me,” “They Can’t Take That Away From Me.”

The Drowsy Chaperone

April 3 – May 11

This parody of American musical comedy of the 1920s makes its Beef & Boards debut. A middle-aged musical theatre buff plays the record of his favorite musical, the (fictional) 1928 hit The Drowsy Chaperone, and the show comes to life – with two lovers on the eve of their wedding, a bumbling best man, a desperate theatre producer, gangsters posing as pastry chefs and an intoxicated chaperone.

Peter Pan

May 15 – June 29

The imaginations of the young and young at heart will soar to Neverland. Fly with Peter and his friends in this musical adaptation of the play by Sir James M. Barrie to a land of mischievous fairies, an Indian tribe, a ticking crocodile, bungling pirates and the famous Captain Hook, played by Jeff Stockberger.

Smoke on the Mountain: Homecoming 

July 5 – Aug. 17

The lovable – and imperfect – Singing Sanders Family returns for the third installment of the popular comedy series. The story takes place in 1945 – seven years since the Sanders Family first came to Mount Pleasant Baptist Church for a Saturday Night Sing. Rev. Mervin Oglethorpe has been called to preach in Texas and is giving his last service before he leaves with his wife June, who is eight months pregnant. Young Dennis Sanders will take over as the pastor, but not before more hilarious and touching stories, and two dozen toe-tapping Bluegrass Gospel favorites.

South Pacific

Aug. 21 – Oct. 5

Set in an island paradise, two parallel love stories are threatened by the dangers of predjudice and World War II. Nellie, a spunky nurse from Arkansas, falls in love with a French plantation owner, Emile, but is conflicted by what she learns about him. And a strapping lieutenant falls for an island girl, but battles his own fears and prejudices. Adapted from a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, South Pacific won 10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Score for songs that include “Some Enchanted Evening,” “Nothing Like a Dame” and “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair.”

The Addams Family
Oct. 9 – Nov. 23

On stage for the first time at Beef & Boards and just in time for the spooky Halloween season, it’s the Tony Award-nominated macabre musical comedy. Gomez Addams faces every father’s nightmare when his daughter, Wednesday, falls in love. What’s worse, she begs him not to tell her mother, Morticia. Everything will change for the family on the fateful night that they host a dinner for Wednesday’s “normal” boyfriend and his parents.

The holiday season is celebrated with the theatre’s original production, featuring beautiful costumes, heartwarming songs, dazzling dancing and even Santa himself. A tradition at Beef &Boards for more than 20 years.

The Pyramid Players also announce their 2015 Live Theatre for Kids series. Designed to entertain children of any age, these shows are a great way to introduce preschoolers to live theatre. Youngsters also have the opportunity to meet the cast after the show for pictures and autographs.

The beloved children’s tale kicks off the Live Theatre for Kids season. Based on E.B. Webb’s popular children’s book of the same name, this musical brings to the stage the tale of an unlikely friendship forged between a young pig and a spider.

Snow White

Oct. 16 - Nov. 14

This classic fairy tale, made popular by the Brothers Grimm, centers around a beautiful princess, who is forced to flee from her home and finds refuge in the forest with some new friends. This musical adaptation includes magic mirrors, seven silly dwarfs and a heroic prince.

A Christmas Carol

Dec. 5 through 21

Returning in 2015 is Beef & Boards’ one-hour adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic, on stage for select performances. Enhanced with holiday carols, this iconic tale of miserly Ebenezer Scrooge who is given a second chance is the ideal way to enjoy the holidays.

It's A Wonderful Life on Big Screen and Silent Auction at IMAX December 5 for $6

Some things mean Christmas more than others. It's A Wonderful Life is one those thigns. Annually an original Christmas movie is shown in Indianapolis the first week of December. Benefiting Indianapolis Downtown Beautification, the film and silent auction beforehand will be held at Indiana State Museum's IMAX, 650 W. Washington St., Indianapolis.

Tickets ($6) are available by clicking here or at the door the evening of the event, Thursday, Dec. 5. The silent auction begins at 5 p.m. and runs through 6:15 p.m. Cash and checks are accepted for the items. Silent auction items include gift certificates to some of downtown's best restaurants, hotels, attractions and more. 

 The classic film begins screening at 6:30 p.m. Seating is limited and expected to sell out. All contributions go to Indianapolis Downtown Beautification.

Brown County Offers Train Rides, Santa, Victorian Carolers for Christmas 2013

Okay, I love Brown County (like most peoplee). However, I had no idea until this year they offer cool Christmas things to do. Normally I head down in the Autumn, hit the neat little shop on the left (as you're coming into town) called Holly Shop, and wander about, sipping cider, traipsing through the trails at the state park and shopping (naturally). After that, I wait until Spring to return. But this year? Maybe it's time to head down in November or December.

The Village of Nashville is going old-fashioned with strolling Victorian-costumed carolers, the Little Nashville Express Train and visits with Santa and his elves, and a live nativity scene. Hot chocolate, cookies, caroling and the official lighting of Santa’s tree happens the first weekend of festivities. After that, every weekend is filled with holiday thappenings.

Things to do include: face painting with Santa, the Christmas Light Parade, gingerbread creations, holiday shows, sing-a-longs and victorian candlelight dinners.

Christmas on the Square 2013 Includes Carolers, Roaming Characters, Train Ride & Live Nativity

A storybook window display following the escapades of Clarence the Christmas Camel, will be highlightedChristmas on the Square and will usher in the holiday season for Hendricks County residents and visitors again this year.

Scheduled from 4-6 p.m. November 29, the experience will include a variety of family activities as the town closes all four streets around the Courthouse Square to vehicular traffic.

Christmas on the Square Activities

Storybook Window Display

Beginning with a book reading at 4 p.m. at the Royal Theater, windows around the Square will be unveiled with each representing a page turning the area into the giant storybook, “Clarence the Christmas Camel.”

Live Nativity Scene

As in recent years, a nativity area with live animals will be stationed at the corner of Washington and Marion streets.

Train Rides

This free activity will occur on Jefferson Street.

Childrens’ Activities

A juggler, face painters and balloon artists will be stationed at various locations inside businesses around the Square. Children also will be able to fill a complimentary stocking with candy and prizes as they visit the various merchants around the Square.

Strolling Carolers

A group of jolly singers will provide a bit of ambience harkening back to traditional Christmas celebrations.

Roaming Holiday Characters

Santa, Mrs. Claus, Rudolph, a snowman and Christmas tree will stroll around the square greeting visitors.

Holiday Melodrama

The Danville High School Drama Department will perform at 3 and 5 p.m. inside the Royal Theater.

Tree Lighting

Santa, Mrs. Claus and one child will flip the switch to light up the Downtown Square to end the evening.

Circle of Lights includes Santa's Mailbox

One of my favorite memories from Christmases of long is writing to Santa Claus. Positive he (or at the very least one of his trusty elves) would pen a reply.To be honest, I can't remember if he ever did.

What I do remember, however, is the trip to take the letter to the post office. The excitement of getting the letter just right, decorating the envelope to the point the address was almost indecipherable, and the satisfaction when I dropped the letter in the slot.

To this day one of my must-watch holidays movies annually is "The Christmas List." Starring Mimi Rogers. The film (1997) reiterates the feeling that goodness brings happiness when the main character mails her grown-up Christmas wish list letter to Santa Claus. This feeling spills over from another favorite, Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol," which instills the warm-fuzzies with the knowledge that human kindness can break down any barrier and mean people can be rehabilitated.

So how do the children in your life get this over-the-top feeling this holiday season? Encourage them to write (cursive if possible, please), decorate and mail a letter to the jolly old elf ~ personally.

Where? 

Santa Claus (or maybe his helpers) has installed an official mailbox at the Circle of Lights location ~ Soldiers and Sailors Monument ~ in downtown Indianapolis. Accepting letters to Father Christmas through December 12, the mailbox is decorated with Santa and reindeer likenesses. Sitting on the east side of Monument Circle, the box faces Market Street, but I encourage you to make it an event. Park the car (much like my father), and enjoy the lights, sip hot chocolate and create lifetime memories for the tots.

Each year, this holiday mailbox is installed for children of all ages to drop off their letters addressed to Santa. And to every child’s delight, Santa himself personally answers each letter that has a return address. In 2012, more than 5,000 letters were sent to Santa.

**Special Note** The lighting ceremony of Circle of Lights is presented by the wonderful folks known as Contractors of Quality Connection and Electrical Workers of IBEW #481. These people work hard annually, selflessly giving of their time in the cold weather to make this happen for all of us to enjoy. The official lighting ceremony will take place Friday evening, Nov. 29 on Monument Circle. More than 100,000 holiday enthusiasts are expected to attend Indiana’s largest, annual, FREE public gathering now in its 51st year.

51st Annual Circle of Lights Decorating Event Saturday, November 9, 2013

I love decorating for the holiday season ~ whether it's decorating the tree (real trees only, please), decorating gifts (Yes, I am one of those people who spend as much time on ribbons and wrap as the gift shopping) or decorating the outside area. I would have to say that growing up in the Midwest means an extra little something when the frost, snowflakes and icicles add in their touch to the exterior.

One of my treasured memories of "Growing up Midwest" (click here for another Midwest Christmas memory) as I like to call it, is the trek to Indianapolis' downtown every holiday. My parents would load all six kids into the station wagon for the annual outing. Mom would have made, and brought with us, her homemade goodies: popcorn balls, fudge and thermoses of steaming hot chocolate (made with real milk, not water and instant powder).

Before pulling out of the driveway you could hear her holler out, "Where's the baby?" "Who's got Jeannie?" My siblings would call back, "She's here," "Let's go!" and "Mmphmfmp," could be heard from me as the scarves (yes, plural) would muffle my answer. Because, as we all know, the smaller you are the more outerwear adults believe you need.

As the youngest ~ and runt of the litter ~ "Baby" "Dolly" or "Jeannie" (as I was referred to depending on the person in my family), was always shoved into the very back of the staple vehicle of most families in those days. The seats flipped up and a table pulled down so my brother and I could set our treats out nicely.

Parking the car, after many attempts to get the "perfect spot," Dad would proudly help each of out of the car and show us the display ~ as if he personally had strung every light, decorated every storefront window and placed the tin soldiers and sailors for us personally. And, yes, I believed he had made all the magic just for me. Oh,, and my siblings, of course...

This year, residents and visitors alike, are invited to join IBEW, volunteers, and speakers at Monument Circle Saturday, Nov. 9 between 9 - 11 a.m. for Deck the Halls: Installation Appreciation. Picture taking, oohing and aahing, and watching the volunteers create the World's Largest Lighted Christmas Tree.or their hard work. Additionally, a Circle of Lights® Coloring Contest station will be set up for kids to work on their creations!

Lighting Ceremony Information

The lighting ceremony of Circle of Lights, presented by the Contractors of Quality Connection and Electrical Workers of IBEW #481, will take place Friday evening, Nov. 29 on Monument Circle. More than 100,000 holiday enthusiasts are expected to attend Indiana’s largest, annual, FREE public gathering now in its 51st year.

The event will include special appearances from holiday entertainers including Indianapolis native Sandi Patty, as well as The von Trapp Family singers, both appearing at the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra’s Duke Energy Yuletide Celebration, and the larger-than-life toy soldiers and sailors and peppermint sticks adorning Monument Circle. In addition, central Indiana entertainers selected from state wide auditions will perform and Santa will make his first official appearance of the 2013 season.

Hyatt’s Christmas in the Kitchen Dec. 12, 2013 ~ Benefiting Indiana Children's Wish Fund

Last year (2012) I was invited to attend Hyatt Regency's Downtown annual event called Christmas in the Kitchen.

What? Yes, in the kitchen. At the Hyatt downtown.

Since I love experiencing something new, I went.

In short...wow.

It was too much fun just strolling about in an evening dress sampling numerous wines, entrees, desserts, cocktails, and bumping into people I knew and didn't. A glass of wine here, lamb chops there, and something gooey and chocolate to nibble while chatting with the chefs and other attendees. The carols being played kept the spirit of the holidays in the air, along with goodwill by everyone there for a great cause.

I will return this year, and hope anyone considering giving to a great cause, will join me at this annual event to benefit Indiana's children.

Indianapolis’ premier holiday event, Hyatt’s Christmas in the Kitchen, returns to benefit Indiana Children’s Wish Fund and grant special Christmas wishes for Indiana Wish children. The holiday food extravaganza takes place Dec. 12 in Hyatt Regency’s main kitchen and ballroom at 6:30 p.m.

Guests will enjoy a wide assortment of delicious appetizers, entrees, desserts, famous “Polar Bear” drinks, wine and spirits. All of the culinary creations, crafted by Executive Chef John Pivar and his culinary team, will be prepared right in front of the guests in the Hyatt kitchen.

A holiday raffle will also be held to raise money for Indiana Children’s Wish Fund. Festive live holiday music will be provided throughout the evening. Festive holiday gingerbread houses (made with love by Wish children) will be on display in the Hyatt kitchen and will be auctioned off to raise money for special Christmas wishes.

Individual tickets are $125 (admittance into the event with seating) or $100 per person (admittance into the event without seating). They are almost sold out, so get them quickly.

Indiana Children’s Wish Fund, established in 1984, grants wishes to Indiana children, ages 3-18, who suffer from a life-threatening illness. Wishes include trips to Disney, shopping sprees, meeting celebrities, family vacations and home computers. To date, the organization has granted over 3,000 wishes to Indiana children.

The 6th annual “Gotta Go Ultimate Gift Guide” is quickly coming upon us, sharing holiday and Christmas gift ideas.

The chosen items will be given away to viewers. Entries must include two of each entry, one for judging purposes and one for presentation on television (if selected).

December 3  is this year's deadline for entries. The list of winners (with image and website) will be published online at GottaGo.us during the week of December 10, 2013.

Entries will, once again, be selected by a three-judge panel.

Those submitting winning entries will be notified by the email address sent with the entry. A link to the online post and television segment will be sent by email.

Purchasing and contact information should be included with entry, along with bio of product and company. Images should be submitted via email. A hi-res image (or two) of each entry must be included via email with information.
