Review: Dance Kaleidoscope: DIVAS!

Guest review by John Simmons ~

At first glance, Dance Kaleidoscope’s Divas is virtually critic-proof. After all, what’s not to like about an evening of dance choreographed to the music of some of the world’s most celebrated female singers? The evening promises to be one of pure entertainment … and DK’s Divas is certainly all of that.
But, if you look closer, you’ll see something far more interesting (and intriguing) going on.
Structurally, Divas is divided into halves: the first half features nine numbers choreographed by members of DK’s young dance troupe to the music of such world-class divas as Annie Lenox, Celine Dion, Adele, Stevie Nicks, Kelly Clarkson, Nina Simone, Shirley Bassey, Patti LaBelle and Barbra Streisand.
The second half features world premieres of works choreographed DK’s Artistic Director David Hochoy (to the music of Janis Joplin) and Guest Choreographer Nicholas A. Owens (to the music of the great Aretha Franklin). Both halves are ably supported by Costumers Guy Clark and Cheryl Sparks, with especially noteworthy work done by Lighting Designer Laura E. Glover.
As you’d expect, Divas’ second half is highly-polished. In his remarks at intermission, David Hochoy spoke of his admiration – born at an early age – for the music of Janis Joplin, and his tribute to her is full of flashing colors, waves of movement and choreography that emphasizes the physicality of his young dancers. It’s a tribute that captures the energy of Joplin’s music, if not its (occasional) sadness.
Nicholas Owens’ tribute to Aretha Franklin is somewhat more varied and, at times, more subdued – featuring such show-stopping numbers as (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman and Respect (two songs that are certainly on everyone’s list of all-time favorite songs) and ending with the lovely and beautifully-choreographed First Snow in Kokomo.
In contrast, Divas’ first half is less a tribute to the divas whose music it celebrates and more of a look inside the minds of the next generation of choreographers, as they explore issues of concern to young people everywhere. Themes covered here include sex, love, the excitement of a first kiss, the joy of self-discovery and the loss of a parent. While technically polished, Divas’ first half is especially interesting because of the idiosyncratic, almost quirky, choices DK’s young artists make.
Jillian Godwin’s First Touch (performed to the music of Adele’s I Miss You), for example, is a very muscular, almost aggressive look at the rush that comes with a new relationship. Missy Trulock’s Edge of Seventeen (choreographed to Stevie Nicks’ song of the same name) features imagery that captures the challenges that women face in dealing with a society that wants them to be both empowered and angelic. Zach Young’s Missionary Man (choreographed to Annie Lenox’s song of the same man) features some sexy – if politically incorrect – choreography, exceeded only by the highly politically incorrect choreography offered by Timothy June’s Enlightenment, a hilarious exploration of diversity and self-discovery danced to Shirley Bassey’s I Am What I Am.
Stuart Coleman makes a bold choice for his Don’t Rain on My Parade (performed by Barbra Streisand) by featuring a single dancer in red (Aleksa Lukasiewicz), in a celebration of the simple joy a person feels in declaring their own self-worth and freedom from expectations (a celebration, Coleman says, that was inspired by the rush he felt when singing Parade solo in a karaoke bar!) These are just some examples of the many delights offered by each of Divas’ nine first half performances.
In his remarks at intermission, David Hochoy spoke about how proud he was of his young dancers and how their work on Divas represents an important first step in helping to preserve the legacy of modern dance. Divas certainly offers an evening’s worth of entertainment, as it celebrates the life and work of some of our most talented female artists. But it also makes you wonder what the future holds – and what works of art DK’s talented choreographers will one day create – as they continue on their journey of self-discovery and channel the artistic power of their own inner divas.

DON’T CROSS THE STREAMS: The Cease and Desist Musical
Book, Lyrics & Music by Mike Hall & Joshua Steele
Additional Music by Steve Milloy
Directed by Mike Sherman
Musical Direction by Steve Milloy
Genre:Musical Comedy
Warnings: Adult content/adult language
A popular early 80’s film about ghosts and the people who bust them is receiving a stage musical adaptation by a New Jersey theatre. When their world is shattered by a “cease and desist” letter from the lawyers of Columbia Pictures, the cast and crew give the show a new title, make delirious changes to an increasingly unrecognizable script and recruit a handsomely clueless soap opera actor to play the role of Peter Venkman. Silly string ion streams are unleashed and a softshoe dance battle is waged in a madcap theatrical farce a la NOISES OFF and “Waiting for Guffman.”

This year’s show is no exception, with several sketches from various playwrights – both local and from across the country – that include Christmas, Hanukkah and a few other holidays thrown in.  “We have six excellent voices this year, so we are taking advantage of that talent by including several musical numbers and at least one a capella piece,” stated Fonseca.  “The cast this year includes four actors that have been in at least one Xmas show and a few that are new to the production. We are certainly proud to have Chuck Goad back at the Phoenix for this holiday season.”

With the recent success of musicals Avenue Q and Spring Awakening, dance will be a bigger part of this year’s show. Choreographer and Dance Kaleidoscope performer Marielle Greenlee is working with the cast on special dance numbers.

“Every year, the dance numbers are among favorites with the audience, so we are pulling out all the stops for dance numbers this year,” said Fonseca. This year’s sketches include ones written by previous Xmas favorites Daniel Guyton and Mark Harvey Levine, as well as some new playwrights.
The cast includes four veterans of past Phoenix Xmas productions: Scot Greenwell, Jason Gloye, Claire Wilcher and Gayle Steigerwald.  Rounding out the cast are Carly Kincannon and Abby Gillan (both recent cast members of Spring Awakening at the Phoenix) and Charles Goad, who is coming back to theatre after taking a break for over two years.

Dance Kaleidoscope Announces 2011-12 Season Happy 40th Birthday DK!

Dance Kaleidoscope Announces 40th Season

Indianapolis: Press release
With its 2011-12 season, Dance Kaleidoscope will turn 40.  Founded in 1972 as part of the Young Audiences program, DK is Indianapolis’ professional contemporary dance company.  Reflecting on the number of years DK has been in Indy, artistic director David Hochoy says with a smile, “Life begins at 40!”

The first concert of the season will be The Four Elements (Redux) in October on the IRT Main Stage.    This piece premiered in 2005 and quickly became an audience favorite.  The powerful section, Earth, will remain in tact.   Water, Air and Fire will be reworked by David Hochoy.

Just before the Super Bowl comes to town, DK will offer an energetic party of a concert called Super Soul.  Featuring the music of Motown, Super Soul will run for the first two weekends of January on IRT’s Upper Stage.

In March, DK will return to IRT’s Main Stage to present its tribute to William Shakespeare called All the World’s a Stage.  The program will include a world premiere of Romeo and Juliet, using Tchaikovsky ‘s soaring music.

Celebrating Indiana’s own Cole Porter, DK will present the full evening audience favorite, COLE! On IRT’s Main Stage.

Tickets and season subscriptions are available at 317.940-6555.

Summer Staycation

For light fun this summer, see DK’s concert, Summer Musicals/Elvis Sizzle.  The first act will be sections from Mad for Musicals, followed by sections from The Elvis Project.  The show will run July 7-10 on IRT’s Main Stage.

Beef and Boards & Dance Kaleidoscope

Dance Kaleidoscope opened to a nearly sold-out theater Friday night at IRT. World Music Carnaval was a delightful, well...kaleidoscope of colors and energy with Brittany Edwards taking the former male lead role in post-intermission's Play Mas'.

Artistic Director, David Hochoy, channels his memories, via the dancers, of his cherished experiences in Trinidad and Brazil at Carnaval time. The musical cornucopia originating from Argentina, Spain, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Africa and Pakistan provides the upbeat tempo required for the intense choreography.

Jillian Godwin’s energy was show-cased best in the first half in Food of Love, matched by George Salinas in the latter half during Play Mas’.

Another mention goes to a behind-the-scenes star. Cheryl Sparks has been the costume designer for DK since 1996. This program’s enchanting costumes became, in themselves, characters. Swirling, parading and leaping with the dancers, enhancing their movements with fluidity and gracefulness at one point, sensually silhouetting and accentuating bodies at the next. Sparks was aided by Lydia Tanji and Deb Dryden in completing the synchronization of color, material and dancer.

Beef and Boards veterans Jeff Stockberger, Ty Stover and Sarah Hund opened the 2010 season for the north side dinner theater with The Foreigner. Zany antics occur with this trio....to be expected with their talent and the venue of a British farce.

Stockberger (Annie, Hook) plays uber-shy Englishman, Charlie Baker who is convinced to trot off to America, with friend, Sgt. ‘Froggy’ LaSueur…to a backwoods fishing cabin in Georgia. The KKK apparently still exists and is less than pleased that a non-American is residing in their small town, even for a few days.

Stover (Annie, Cats) plays Froggy admirably giving the ‘only sober guy at the party’ attitude needed for the madcap adventure. He attempts to help his shy friend from having to socialize with the locals, by telling everyone that Baker can’t speak English. Then promptly leaves Baker in the hands of the strangers and departs for the local Army base.

Hund (Smoke on the Mountain) plays Catherine Simms, fiancé to the local Reverend David Marshall (David Schmittou). Always with perfect timing, Hund plays the debutante-trying-to-be-a-reverend’s-wife. A tough act to pull off, socialite party girl trying to turn over a new leaf, but Hund creates the perfect balance. Playing off the Reverend, the Englishman who doesn’t speak, and younger, intellect-challenged brother Ellard (David Purdy), Hund proves she is capable of being the hub of the wheel.

When everyone divulges secrets to Baker, Stockberger shines at what he does best…almost nothing. With slight twitches and minor glances, he speaks without uttering a word, which makes almost nothing into something great. A master at emoting through his movements, Stockberger brings quirkiness to the staunch man which is endearing.

Kate Braun brings authenticity to the lodge-owner, Betty Meeks, a southern lady with spunk, creating a likeable character with whom the audience empathizes.

Daniel Scharbrough nails the closed-minded, redneck, Owen Muser, with thorough despicability. As Baker finds out the sister and brother are being conned out of their money by the man of the cloth, he finds a way to bring everyone together to fight the evil within their midst.

Bottom Line: The Foreigner proves, once again, why British farces are the charming specialty of Beef and Boards.
