2015 Symphony on the Prairie Schedule Includes Blues Traveler, Ol' Blue Eyes and Boogie Nights

Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra’s 34th annual Symphony on the Prairie season includes Blues Traveler, Ol' Blue Eyes and Boogie Nights.

Beginning June 19 and running through Sept. 6. This year the orchestra performs the first six weekends and brings in their musical guests for the remaining shows of the popular summer series.

Located at Conner Prairie, the outdoor music series is perfect for families, friends and company outings. Grassy areas are available for those wishing to bring a blanket or lawn chair. Tables for 10 are available at an additional cost. Food, alcohol and candles are allowed also.

Indianapolis Symphonic Choir 2014 - 2015 Season

The Indianapolis Symphonic Choir opens its 2014 - 2015 Season with Mozart: Requiem, followed by the 200-member Symphonic Choir’s annual holiday favorite Festival of Carols with four performances in downtown Indianapolis and Carmel.

From the traditional Handel’s Messiah to the consistently classy annual Gala Bel Canto, the season is highlighted with the world premiere performance of Farué Requiem & Fairouz Zabur pairing the intimate piece with a new commissioned work from composer Mohammed Fairouz. A pillar of choral-orchestral repertoire, Beethoven’s Ninth concludes the season alongside the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and Maestro Krzysztof Urbański.

Dance Kaleidoscope Holds Fundraiser December 7

*Press release* Dance Kaleidoscope is pleased to announce Raymond Leppard and Marianne W. Tobias will play a piano concert with DK dancers Dec. 7. The concert will take place at Schrott Center for the Arts, located at Butler University, Indianapolis.

Performances will include Ancient Airs and Dances (Respighi), Gymnopedies (Satie) and Mother Goose Suite (Ravel). Leppard and Tobias will each play a grand piano as dancers perform.

Both Leppard and Tobias have enjoyed illustrious musical careers around the world and in Indianapolis with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra.

One of the most respected international conductors of his time, Leppard has conducted nearly every major orchestra in the world, including the New York Philharmonic, the English Chamber Orchestra and the Israel Philharmonic. His last position before retiring was as conductor for ISO. He is also an accomplished pianist and composer, including film scores.

Tobias has enjoyed a fascinating multi-faceted career. She is a native of Indianapolis who graduated cum laude from Harvard University and holds an artist diploma from Longy Conservatory of Music of Bard College. While in the Boston area, she worked for the famed chef Julia Child at WGBH. In Minneapolis, she worked as an assistant to Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Dominick Argento and taught at the University of Minnesota and St. Paul Academy and Summit School. In 1986, Tobias returned to Indianapolis and became the resident program annotator for the ISO, as well as serving on its board of directors.

ISO Reaches Financial Goals ~ Musicians will Continue for 5 More Years

INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Symphony Society’s Board of Directors announced today that it has exceeded the $5 million goal for new donor commitments in connection with its major fundraising campaign. Due to the overwhelming support received in the past 10 days, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra is still compiling the results, but the final tally will be announced when all gifts and pledges are accounted for and documented.

“We are thrilled by this strong support from the community, especially in these final days,” said Martha Lamkin, board chair for the ISO. “On behalf of the ISO board, staff and musicians, we thank all of those who have come forward to support the ISO at this critical juncture. As a result of this achievement, the five-year contract with our musicians negotiated last fall will go into effect at midnight tonight.”

Since Oct. 16, 2012, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra has been operating under a short-term “bridge” agreement while this major fundraising initiative took place to raise $5 million in new donor commitments. Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay and Indiana Pacers owner Herb Simon pledged lead gifts of $750,000 each in mid-December, and board member Yvonne Shaheen provided a dollar-for-dollar matching gift of $500,000 to support the effort.

The “Life. It’s Better with Music” campaign was the first phase in ensuring a financially sustainable future for the Orchestra over the next five years. The ISO will continue calling on all subscribers, patrons, affiliate group members, corporate leaders and other supporters to purchase single tickets and subscriptions, provide support for programs and educational efforts, and make legacy and annual fund gifts so that the ISO can continue to be an integral part of the central Indiana community through its many music programs and other outreach activities.

ISO Update: Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and Musicians Reach Agreement, Season Resumes Oct. 18-20

INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Symphony Society, Inc. and the Indianapolis Musicians, Local #3 of the American Federation of Musicians have reached an agreement. 

Late Monday evening they ratified two contracts – a “bridge” agreement, effective Oct. 16, 2012-Feb. 3, 2013, and the major financial terms of a five-year contract beginning Feb. 4, 2013 and expiring on Sept. 3, 2017.

The agreements are an important component of a new business model for the ISO that includes substantially reduced costs, significant new fundraising efforts by the board, the staff and the musicians, and a more sustainable draw rate on the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra Foundation (the endowment). 

The terms of the five-year contract include a salary range of $53,000 in year one to $70,000 in year five and the continuation of healthcare and most pension benefits. Overall, the contract represents $11.5 million in concessions by the musicians, which includes a 32 percent pay cut in the first year. The contract’s final year represents an approximate 10 percent pay cut from the musicians’ current salary. While the musicians have agreed to work eight weeks less than in previous seasons in the first two seasons of the new contract, over the five-year period there will be a 38-42 week performance schedule that maintains the ISO’s classical, pops, family, holiday and summer concert series under the ISO’s artistic leadership of Maestros Krzysztof Urbański and Jack Everly, as well as dynamic new programming created by the ISO’s artists-in-residence, Time for Three.

As a key ingredient to the success of a five-year contract, the ISO and musicians agreed to a short-term contract in order to put the musicians back to work immediately and to permit the $5 million in funding from new donors to be secured. In addition, the ISO will be calling on its community of subscribers, patrons, affiliate group members, major gift and annual fund donors and corporate leaders to rise to the occasion and contribute significantly to the Orchestra’s fundraising efforts by purchasing subscriptions and single tickets, donating to the annual fund, making legacy gifts and sponsoring the ISO’s concerts and educational programs. Only with robust community support will the ISO be successful in raising 50-100 percent more than the $6.5 million it receives each year in annual gifts.

On Thursday, Oct. 18, the first Stella Artois Happy Hour at the Symphony of the 2012-2013 season features the ISO’s dynamic string trio, Time for Three, with the Orchestra. Doors open at 5 p.m. with complimentary food and beverages from local restaurants, and the one-hour performance begins at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 per person.

For his return to Indianapolis, Maestro Urbański will open this weekend’s Lilly Classical Series concerts with Olivier Messiaen’s Poèmes pour Mi, featuring American soprano and Indiana University alumna Twyla Robinson. Following intermission, Maestro Urbański will return to lead the Orchestra in Claude Debussy’s La Mer and conclude with Boléro, Maurice Ravel’s beloved dance-inspired masterpiece. The concert on Friday, Oct. 19 begins at 8 p.m., and the performance on Saturday, Oct. 20 begins at 5:30 p.m. Tickets start at $12 per person.

The IRT Honors ISO Tickets During the Next Two Weekends

Indianapolis -- In an effort to support Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra patrons during contract negotiations, the Indiana Repertory Theatre will honor symphony patrons that hold tickets to cancelled ISO performances.

Patrons can redeem their tickets for any IRT performances through September 23. Shows include Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, The Syringa Tree and The Night Watcher. ISO patrons can call the IRT Box Office at 317-635-5252.

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra welcomes iconic and award-winning singer/songwriter Don McLean in his debut with the ISO at Marsh Symphony on the Prairie Friday and Saturday, Aug. 3 and 4, at 8 p.m. at the Conner Prairie Amphitheater. The concerts, titled 40 Years of American Pie: An Evening with Don McLean, will feature many of McLean’s beloved songs and hits such as “American Pie,” “Crying,” “And I Love You So,” “Vincent (Starry, Starry Night)” and “Castles in the Air.”
“American Pie” was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2003, and McLean was inducted into the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame in 2004.

40 Years of American Pie: An Evening with Don McLean also features Tony Migliore (Music Director, Conductor, Piano), David Smith (Electric Bass), Carl Vipperman (Electric Guitar) and Jerry Kroon (Drums).

Premium Parking passes may be purchased for $20 each exclusively through the Hilbert Circle Theatre Box Office. All other Conner Prairie parking is free-of-charge and there are many volunteers available to assist patrons in carrying their belongings from their vehicles to their seats.

Guests may bring their own food, beverages (including alcohol), blankets, and lawn chairs or reserve a table for up to 10 people just feet from the stage for $59 (plus the ticket price).

Stay up-to-date on weather and traffic conditions by tuning in to WIBC (93.1 FM), the official radio station of Marsh Symphony on the Prairie. Patrons can sign up for the ISO’s Symphony weather text message service by texting WEATHER [date of performance] (e.g. WEATHER AUGUST 3) to 24025. This service will be available for every performance and will be updated by the ISO as conditions change.

Due to road construction on the northeast side of the Indianapolis metropolitan area, the ISO and Conner Prairie encourage patrons to “Know Before You Go.” WIBC-FM will offer the latest traffic updates for patrons en route.

Concert Review: Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and John Denver Tribute Singer Jim Curry

The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra teams up with Jim Curry, a tribute singer for one of the country's most beloved singers and songwriters: John Denver.
Performances are on stage at The Hilbert Circle Theatre, Indianapolis, and The Palladium, Carmel, March 9-11. Curry and wife Anne perform the top hits of the folk singer with passion and genuine deep-rooted appreciation. Accompanying guest conductor Richard Kaufman worked with Denver for more than 24 years giving an added layer to the production.

Surely one of the greatest aspects of the music of John Denver (nee Henry John Deutschendorf, Jr.) is the symphonic sound injected into his songs throughout his career. Whether heard live in concerts, taped on albums or televised with The Muppets, Denver was able to reach down into the deepest part of your heart and verbalize those hidden feelings of love, wonder and happiness, as well as sadness, friendship and respect for nature.

Denver's songs made it okay to love, jump for joy and ... care.

The song list was extensive, bringing tears, laughter and a sense of wonderment and appreciation from the multi-generational audience. The performance opened with "Rocky Mountain High," "Leaving on a Jet Plane," "Wild Montana Skies," and, naturally, Denver's signature tune, "Annie's Song."

Bottom Line: The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and Jim Curry fill up your senses with cherished memories of John Denver.

Artist Biographies

Richard Kaufman has devoted much of his career to conducting in concert halls and recordings and supervising music for films and television productions. Currently he serves as Principal Pops Conductor for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and the Pacific Symphony Orchestra. He has collaborated with John Denver, The Carpenters, Burt Bacharach, Neil Sedaka, Neil Diamond, Chris Botti, The Pointer Sisters, Ray Charles and the Beach Boys, among others.

Jim Curry has performed his full-length John Denver tribute concerts to sold-out audiences in Las Vegas at the Silverton Hotel and Casino. With a natural singing voice that closely resembles that of the legendary pop artist, Curry launched his unique career following Denver’s death when CBS Television produced a made-for-TV movie, Take Me Home, The John Denver Story, in which Jim performed an off-camera role of singing the popular songs as the voice of John Denver.

The annual compilation of the Gotta Go Top 10 Best Performing Arts performances in Indianapolis is always difficult to select due to the quantity of great talent and shows in the Indy metro area. As the 12th largest city in the nation, the Circle City offers something for just about everyone.

With so many shows, and only one of me, let me say as always that this is not an all-inclusive list and represents only the performances personally attended and reviewed by this critic.
Some of the reviews were in print, some online, and some were on WIBC.

Whether you agree, disagree, or have comments or questions, I would enjoy hearing your thoughts.

1.  Opening Night Gala: Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra with Maestro Krzysztof Urbanski-Urbanski brings in a whole new era for Indy. The energy that evening was palpable. Click here for review.

2.  Puccini People: Dance Kaleidoscope-Quite simply, this is the best, in my opinion, of David Hochoy's work in the five years I have been a performing arts critic in Indianapolis. I reviewed it on WIBC to give listeners the time to catch it.**

Bottom Line: I have enjoyed 2011 and look forward to Indy's offerings for 2012. So many more could have, should have been mentioned. Each year it becomes more and more difficult to choose the best of the performances and that is a great problem to have.
