National Bloody Mary Day

January 1 is National Bloody Mary Day. Considered one of the oldest known mixed drinks, it has a murky past. The rumored origins of this cocktail are as numerous and varied as New Year’s resolutions. But, I always did like a mystery ~

The cocktail’s gorier heritage theory is it's named after Queen Mary of England and her brutal persecution of Protestants in the 16th Century. Bartender Fernand “Pete” Petiot is said to have created a basic version in the 1920's. Either way, the Bloody Mary is a staple at Sunday brunches around the globe and deserves its own day. Here are a couple of recipes from Sobieski Vodka to get 2014 started out right.

Classic Bloody Mary
1 ½ oz. Sobieski Vodka
3 oz. tomato juice
½ oz. lemon juice
Dash of Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco and horseradish
Salt & pepper
Combine all ingredients in a tall glass and garnish with celery stick.

Bacon Mary
 1 ½ oz. Sobieski Vodka
3 oz. tomato juice
Dash of Worcestershire sauce
Dash of Tabasco
Salt & pepper
Combine all ingredients in a glass and garnish with a piece of crispy bacon, celery stalk and green bean.

Bloody Fairy
1 ½ oz. Lucid Absinthe
1 oz. Sobieski Vodka
4 oz. spicy bloody mary mix
4 dashes of Worcestershire sauce
Horseradish, ground pepper, garlic salt, celery salt
In a pint glass add ice, Lucid Absinthe, Sobieski Vodka, bloody mary mix, Worcestershire sauce and other spices. Shake and serve with an olive, pepperoncini, and lime wedge.

Infused: Cookbook Review: The Butch Bakery Cookbook

I enjoy reviewing cookbooks, especially when it involves creating something that stands out in a field inundated with cookbooks. “The Butch Bakery Cookbook” by David Arrick has done just that with “man-inspired” cupcakes infused with whiskey, rum and other adult flavors.

Created by Arrick, (former Wall Street suit-wearer) the owner of Butch Bakery, New York City, along with Janice Kollar, former owner of Kollar Cookies, NYC, created a book rich with recipes and delectable images by Jason Wyche. The step-by-step guide takes readers on a journey illustrating the importance of quality ingredients, stepping outside the box and having fun while making cupcakes.

If you have always wondered why there is no bacon on the trending, tiny cakes, wonder no more. Arrick recognizes the importance of appealing to a man’s taste buds and applies various “manly” ingredients, including pork, peanut butter and root beer. No sparkles, polka dots or fancy glitter appear in these recipes. However, if women want to commit to the old adage, “the quickest way to a man’s heart is through his stomach,” she won’t go wrong with this collection.

Giving specific instructions on needs prior to starting each baking project, the bakery owner gets the mindset of men and applies the correct style of writing: efficient, direct and appealing chapter titles. “Desserts for Dudes,” includes boot camp, exact needs for the male baker’s toolbox and other pertinent information. After that, chapters are named for the type of goodie recipes included: “Play Ball,” “Touchdown” and “Barbecue” to name a few.

Don’t be discouraged that this is just another collection of cupcake recipes. The ingredients will put that idea right out of your head. Craving a chili dog? It’s in here, along with the secret ingredient of cayenne powder. The Chocolate Stout Cupcakes, aka Beer Run, hits the Guinness tap for both the cake and topping. Defense Defense’s red velvet cupcake gets topped with a Jack Daniels’ frosting.

Having ladies over? Mojitos are jazzed up via dark rum, lime zest and cream cheese. A Rum and Coke is baked goodness due to a heavy dose of rum raisins, white chocolate chips and nutmeg perks up the adult-style dessert named “Big Papi.” The B-52 makes a splash with a Kahlua-soaked Madagascar cupcake with a Bailey's Bavarian filling.

The Old-fashioned, once a standard male drink gets a contemporary touch with this baked version of whiskey, orange zest and bitters. The Side Car shimmies up to the bar stool in its cupcake liner and filled with brandy, Cointreau and butter-cream frosting.

“Butch’s Baking Lesson” included after every recipe gives the must-not-forget detail, while, also at the end of the recipes, are handy mix-and-match ideas, alternative recipes and “Plan of Attack” hints and tips.

Bottom Line: “The Butch Bakery Cookbook” is certain to be a favorite with men ~ and anyone cooking with men in mind.

Fair Food 2009

It’s that marvelous, wonderful time of the year again – state and county fair time. The 4-H projects are turned in for judging, ribbons are distributed and displayed, rides are bolted together and, best of all, concession booths start selling fair food.
Fair Food Time!

Fair food is in a food group all its own and probably not on the nutritional food pyramid. Much of it started as real food, and then metamorphosed into junk food on steroids. Noir movie director Tim Burton couldn’t come up with the weird extremes which have been taken with once reasonably edible stuff. Nothing is too
far out, nothing is off limits, and anything healthy can, and will, be turned into the sinful delights we dream
about the rest of the year.

So what’s out there? The common pineapple whip ice cream, corn dogs and walking tacos have been upstaged by the truly weird. First, the Snickers candy bar was deep fried, then Oreos, then Twinkies...

OK, here’s the list of food gone crazy at the fairs which I have heard about, seen in person or actually eaten.
First, the kabob items, because at fairs, if the food item isn’t drowned in a vat of hot oil, it’s skewered, right?
Salad on a stick

Salad on a stick – someone figured out how to put lettuce on a skewer. Healthier, true, but where do the croutons fit into this picture? Pineapple spears, Carmellows, caramel-covered marshmallows, and cheesecake
wedges are now on sticks. The newest kabobs to hit the circuit are chocolate-covered peanut butter rounds, chocolate-covered Key Lime pie and frozen s’mores. The last item is, of course, drizzled with chocolate, caramel or other sweet toppings.

Pretzel rods are being dipped in chocolate or caramel, fish are in tacos and mashed-potato martinis are hitting the midway this year.

What’s being batter-dipped and deep-fried? Frog legs, banana pudding wraps and Pop Tarts. Hot dogs are now being wrapped in a zucchini skin, deep fried and called, what else, zucchini weenie. Say that three
times fast.
Deep-fried chocolate-covered strawberry

Chocolate-covered bacon is also deep fried now, as are Jelly Belly jelly beans, Spam, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, cheese-filled sausages, Tootsie Rolls, alligator meat, Pepsi, Coke and, drum roll please, White Castle hamburgers. Yep, the little square guys are battered and oiled up for a fast-track heart attack.

The healthier fare being given the royal-oil treatment are strawberries, pineapple and bananas. Avocados, carrots and green beans have not entered the concession zone, as far as I know. However, there’s always next year.

If you have a favorite fair food, share it with me by emailing a note to elizabeth@gottago.us. Me, I will be right here, figuring out how to deep fry cotton candy.
