On January 4th, we held a press conference to debut Super 46 Sandwiches, our homage to Super Bowl XLVI to be played here in Indianapolis this Sunday, Feb. 5. We worked with Indianapolis Monthly Magazine to put together this great list of 46 of the best sandwiches throughout Indiana.

From Fair Oaks to Evansville, from Indianapolis to Roanoke, these 46 sandwiches represent the best of Indiana.

For the past four weeks the public has voted on their favorite sandwiches. First, the list was narrowed to down from 46 to just 16. From there, the sandwiches were seeded and we began the Super 46 Sandwiches Playoffs.

We went from the Sweet 16, down to the Elite Eight, to the Final Four and the Super Bowl of the Super 46 Sandwiches and after more than 250,000 votes we finally have a winner.

Schnitzelbank, located in Jasper, IN presented the winning sandwich, The Bratwurst. Larry and Betty Hanselman have been the proprietors of the German eatery since 1961.

The Schnitzelbank Restaurant’s Bratwurst and Rock Cola 50s Café’s Mile High Club Sandwich are the finalists in Indiana Office Tourism Development’s Super 46 Sandwich promotion.

The contest began with 46 sandwiches. Voting for the latest round lasted a week, and garnered 28,516 votes. Since the contest began on Jan. 3, 228,064 votes have been cast.

Rock Cola Café’s sales are up this month by more than 40 percent. The restaurant, located in Indianapolis, has sold more Mile High Club Sandwiches in the last 30 days than it has in the last three years.

The Schnitzelbank Restaurant in Jasper is going through 100 pounds of bratwurst, which is about 500 to 600 links. Typically this time of year only 30 pounds are used.

Voting to determine the winner of the Super 46 Sandwich contest will begin today, and end Thursday, Feb. 2 at 10 a.m. with a winner announced that day. The public will receive an opportunity to view the final two sandwiches on Wednesday, Feb. 1 at 5 p.m. in Super Bowl Village. Special guests will be invited to try the two sandwiches and give their opinion.

Voting for the Super 46 Sandwiches will continue in a bracket-style playoff that coincides with the NFL Playoffs. Voting to determine the winner will continue at Super46.com. Each visitor to the site may only vote once per round.

The Super 46 Sandwich promotion was launched by the Indiana Office of Tourism Development, the Indianapolis Super Bowl Host Committee and the publishers of Indianapolis Monthly, to showcase Indiana foods and restaurants to Super Bowl visitors.

Super Bowl XLVI 2012 Indianapolis Gets Super 46 Sandwiches

Hoagy, stacker, sammy... whatever the preferred nickname, pretty much everyone loves some sort of filling between two pieces of some type of bread. In honor of Super Bowl XLVI, the first time ever event in Indianapolis, Super 46 was created by the Indiana Office of Tourism to showcase local foods in the favorite Super Bowl party form.

The press conference held at Shapiro's Delicatessen January 4 brought out, for the media, some of the 46 sandwiches created by local eateries.

A great place to highlight great sandwiches, considering the history of the world-famous Indy food stop. Started in 1905, the downtown place has been in the right location for many memorable occasions at Conseco, now Banker's Life Fieldhouse, the Hoosier (aka RCA) Dome, Lucas Oil Stadium, Market Square Arena,, the list goes on...

So many places which have come and gone, and those that are still here, all within walking distance of the still-standing sammy spot. Now the Super Bowl will be within minutes of its doors... one Indianapolis landmark event meeting one Indianapolis landmark restaurant...

Now...on to the sandwiches.
All 46 restaurants were not at the press conference but, the ones that were showcased their goods with flair. Heaping platters of sandwiches were pleasing to the eye and palate. Here is a list of my favorites from the eateries in attendance and their offerings.

• Shapiro's-The classic Reuben is well known and loved.
• Schnitzelbank-Bratwurst piled high with mustard and sauerkraut.
• Harry & Izzy's/St. Elmo's-Prime rib with special sauce is hot in temperature and horseradish.
• Historic Steer Inn-Meatball sub with cheese and hearty tomato sauce.
• Goose the Market-Batali on a hard roll is filling with its stacked meats and cheese.
