Restaurant Review: Hoosier Park's Winner's Circle Pub, Grille & OTB

Hoosier Park's Off-Track Betting establishment, Winner's Circle Pub, Grille & OTB, opened its new location in downtown Indianapolis quietly during the 2011 holidays. I was invited to check out the menu at Indy's newest eatery, located at 20 N. Pennsylvania St.

Upon entering the horseshoe-shaped interior, you are greeted by the pub ahead of you and the restaurant to your left. Individual betting is located to the right and beyond a door is a private party room and a smoker's betting lounge.

The pub is high energy with large screen televisions and a rather cool under-counter lighting system, which I was allowed to change the colors from pink to blue, etc. Although there are martinis on the menu, patrons tend to drink single liquors over ice at this establishment. The wine list is well appointed and local beers are always in rotation.

The dining area is more of a horse country's relaxed country club atmosphere enhanced by over-sized, black and white equine photography displayed on the far wall.
The menu is American comfort food, including faves like baked mac 'n cheese, southern fried chicken and steaks. A few twists, such as appetizers of roasted peppers, sweet potato chips and Asian-inspired beef and pineapple skewers keep the choices fresh and interesting.

An absolute must-try is Executive Chef Brian Seal's dessert menu highlight, Chocolate Brownie with Peanut Butter Ganache (see photo above). It is large enough for two, but too good to share. I'll leave that decision to you.

Bottom Line: Hoosier Park's Winner's Circle Pub, Grille & OTB serves up comfort food with a side of fun.

Indiana Landmarks Seeks Volunteers

Volunteer opportunities at Indiana Landmarks campus
*** Press Release ***
If you have wondered, "How do I volunteer?" here is your volunteer opportunity.

Indiana Landmarks is recruiting volunteers, offering a variety of experiences appealing to young people looking for job experience and folks of every age seeking educational enrichment and meaningful ways to contribute their time.

The nonprofit organization welcomes those who’d like to know more about its volunteer options to an open house Wed., Feb. 15, 2012, 5:30-7 p.m. at Indiana Landmarks Center, 1201 Central
Avenue. For directions, click here.

The center is an adapted nineteenth-century church which holds a 400-seat theater as well as the smaller Cook Theater and large reception halls. The building at the corner of 12th and Central is in the Old Northside historic district, a mile north of Monument Circle. Morris-Butler House, a restored Victorian site next door to the center at 1204 North Park, was built in 1865.

The 52-year old organization saves, restores and adapts vintage structures throughout Indiana. It seeks to enlist volunteers who will lead entertaining and educational tours of Morris-Butler House and Indiana Landmarks Center, walking tours of Monument Circle and other historic areas of Indianapolis, and motorcoach tours for groups visiting the capital city.

For tour guides, Indiana Landmarks provides a required six-week training course. The course covers the history and development of Indianapolis’s downtown and landmark neighborhoods, architectural history, and how to create and deliver a compelling tour.

The organization also needs volunteers to provide office and library assistance and help with the special events, art exhibits, and performances held at Indiana Landmarks Center and Morris-Butler House. Volunteers greet and direct people, answer questions, usher at performances, and assist in set up for events. Training for these volunteer opportunities ranges from on-the-spot to a few hours, depending upon the task.

In addition to training, Indiana Landmarks’ volunteers receive complimentary membership, continuing education, the chance to visit fascinating historic sites, opportunities for involvement in the development of new tours, and social activities.

Indiana Landmarks also needs volunteers at its historic sites in Cambridge City, Aurora, and French Lick-West Baden. To learn more about volunteering, people can attend the February 15 information session, or contact Gwendolen Raley, 317-636-5409, tourism@indianalandmarks.org.

Whitney Houston Dies at 48

 Whitney Elizabeth Houston, (Aug. 9, 1963 – Feb. 11, 2012)

Whitney Elizabeth Houston, born Aug. 9, 1963, passed away today at the age of 48. Setting, and breaking, music records throughout her career, Houston topped the charts in the 1980s and '90s.

The daughter of gospel singer Cissy Houston, Whitney flourished in the pop genre, selling more than 170 million albums. Starting her career as a model, she quickly adapted to the musical arena stemming from her roots singing in the church.

Representatives for Ms. Houston have declined to furnish any details about the songbird's death other than to confirm she passed away on February 11, 2012. Beverly Hills Police Dept. representative, Lt.Mark Rosen, has confirmed that Houston died in her room at the Beverly Hills Hilton Hotel. Detectives are investigating the cause of death.

Houston's death on the eve of the 54th annual Grammy Awards is bittersweet as she once reigned as pop music's queen, scooping up the award six times with a total of 16 nominations during her career.
Some of her numerous chart-topping hits include, Saving all my Love for You, You Give Good Love, How Will I know, Greatest Love of All, I Will Always Love You and Didn't We Almost Have it All.
Other credits to her are films The Bodyguard, (1992) costarring Houston and Kevin Costner, and 1995's Waiting to Exhale, with Angela Bassett.

Indy Wine Trail: Chocolate Lover's Weekend February 2012

Chocolate, wine and friends make for a pleasant way to spend a weekend and metro Indy wineries know and love that fact so much they have an event devoted to them. Indy Wine Trail hosts its annual Chocolate Lover's Weekend February 11 and 12, noon to 6 p.m. each day.

Having trekked along the Chocolate Lover's Weekend trail myself (see review here)I can easily recommend it. Novice wine drinkers can learn their likes and dislikes at a nominal cost, learn about the camaraderie that enhances the trail experience and indulge in chocolate served in numerous forms. Experienced wine enthusiasts and novices alike can taste the recently crowned 2012 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition's Riesling gold winner at Easley Winery (click here for details), sip honey mead wine at New Day Meadery (see review here), and visit newcomer Cedar Creek Winery.
I generally recommend trail followers to end their Saturday evening trail activities at Mallow Run Winery (if possible) for music and singing by the fireplace. I also encourage to begin your journey at the winery farthest from  home. In my case that is Simmons Winery, and by being there at opening time, allows me to not use valuable driving time during the noon-6 p.m. trail hours.
Buck Creek Winery and Chateau Thomas Winery (Plainfield) are on opposite sides of Indianapolis. With the opening of Chateau Thomas in Fishers, however, the north side is now an option to ease the driving time.

Who: Seven wineries (see list and links below) within driving range of each other.
What: Indy Wine Trail's Chocolate Lover's Weekend. Participants receive wine tastings, chocolate desserts, and a commemorative glass. And, upon completion of all seven wineries, a six-bottle tote.
When: Saturday, February 11and Sunday, February 12; Hours: Noon-6 pm each day.
Tickets: On sale at any of the seven Indy Wine Trail wineries. Advance tickets-$25. Day of event tickets-$30. Designated Driver tickets-$12. Tickets are good for the entire weekend.

Wild Shot Mezcal is made in San Luis Potosi, Mexico from 10-year-old green agave plants. Mezcal produced with this type of agave is easily identifiable by its smooth smoky flavor. Harvested by hand and then cooked in masonry ovens for two days, the “piñas” are mashed on a circular milestone turned by a pair of mules to extract the honey juice. After fermentation, the “pulque” is distilled twice in copper pot stills. The Silver is immediately bottled while the Reposado is aged for two months in oak casks.

Super 46 Announces Winning Sandwich for Super Bowl XLVI

Super 46 Sandwich Winner
The Bratwurst | Schnitzelbank (Jasper)

*** Press Release ***

On January 4th, we held a press conference to debut Super 46 Sandwiches, our homage to Super Bowl XLVI to be played here in Indianapolis this Sunday, Feb. 5. We worked with Indianapolis Monthly Magazine to put together this great list of 46 of the best sandwiches throughout Indiana.

From Fair Oaks to Evansville, from Indianapolis to Roanoke, these 46 sandwiches represent the best of Indiana.

For the past four weeks the public has voted on their favorite sandwiches. First, the list was narrowed to down from 46 to just 16. From there, the sandwiches were seeded and we began the Super 46 Sandwiches Playoffs.

We went from the Sweet 16, down to the Elite Eight, to the Final Four and the Super Bowl of the Super 46 Sandwiches and after more than 250,000 votes we finally have a winner.

Schnitzelbank, located in Jasper, IN presented the winning sandwich, The Bratwurst. Larry and Betty Hanselman have been the proprietors of the German eatery since 1961.

Celebrity Sightings during Super Bowl XLVI in Indianapolis

Indianapolis' Super Bowl XLVI offers top-notch parties, the amazing Super Bowl Village, and, of course, the big game. But what if what you are really into, or least slightly curious about, which celebrities made the trek to the Midwest?
Naturally they will be at the game inside Lucas Oil Stadium, along with thousands of other fans. Of course they will be in and out of Indianapolis International Airport, and at the local top hotels, including Conrad Hilton, JW Marriott, Hyatt Regency, The Canterbury, The Columbia Club and Omni Severin. But guaranteed the security is amped up too high for you to sneak in and snap a photo.

So, where do you go to find a celebrity or pro ball player during their down time? Think about what you would do while in a town for a few short days on business. That's right...business. Although most of the athletes (some are from other teams or non-football athletes) and many of the famous people are here for pleasure, many are also here for business purposes. (Think of making public appearances, parties and ceremonies as part of their job.) Also, consider what you would want to see while in a strange town and what you would need to do while away from home.

Eating, shopping and working out are activities most people do while staying away from home, for whatever reason. Sightseeing, definitely, but food, souvenirs and exercise are necessities to everyone. With that in mind...

Dining
According to my sources, the restaurants to attempt to get a reservation for is... (pretty much anywhere, of course) with a few maybe more so than others. But the ones most likely to capture the attention of the rich and famous?
  1. St. Elmo Steakhouse-(127 S. Illinois St.) The world famous shrimp cocktail draws the celebs from, well, around the world to prove they can handle the heat.
  2. Fogo de Chao-(117 E. Washington St.) Delicious meat, lots of delicious, hand-carved meat, makes this a shoo-in as a favorite place for athletes (hint) and celebs alike.
  3. St. Elmo-Shrimp Cocktail  Izzy Evans
  4. Shapiro's Delicatessen-(808 S. Meridian St.) Another world-famous eatery has produced sandwiches, including the locals' must-try Reuben sandwich since 1905.
Shopping
Where will they shop? Naturally, the Circle Centre Mall will have its share of the famous out-of-towners. But those in the know, and those who have asked their hotel concierge, will probably trek over to Massachusetts Avenue, aka Mass Ave. for boutique, eclectic shopping., including Silver in the City,  Mass Ave Wine Shoppe and Mass Ave Toys.

Exercise
After all, athletes, performing artists, and celebrities of all sorts need to stay in shape for a variety of reasons. With the hotels packed full, and the (hopefully) continued beautiful weather, many will opt out. Outside, that is, for walking, running and bicycling opportunities. Where will they go to walk off the calories and stretch their muscles?
  1. The Canal-With arguably the city's most beautiful scenery, paddle boats and walkways, this three-mile popular spot at White River State Park is the perfect place to go for exercise.
  2. YMCA-Located at the Athenaeum, the "Y" offers plenty of treadmills and free weights withing walking distance of most of the hotels.
  3. IntoSalsa-Many celebrities keep in shape by dancing their pounds away. Latin dances are taught at this studio, located just above another local favorite, Acapulco Joe's.
The Canal at White River State Park  Image/IzzyEvans

Meg Ryan, Jimmy Fallon, Peyton Manning, and Tony Dungy have already been spotted. Wherever you go, for the remainder of Super Bowl 46 week, keep your camera ready for the next celeb sighting.

6 Places to Go if You aren't Going to Super Bowl XLVI

Super Bowl XLVI is the once-in-a-lifetime event no one in Indiana wants to miss. Or don’t they?
Although the festivities will be glorious, there might be some who are comfortable with not attending (the sure-to-be best-ever) Super Bowl XLVI.
Image provided by Hoosier Park Racing & Casino
The football spectacle will bring an extra 150,000 folks to the downtown area, along with the accompanying parking, traffic and crowd issues. If you are not one of those 150,000 fans then here's the list for you. Proving there is more than football in Indiana, here are 6 Places to Go if you are not wanting to hang out at the Super Bowl Village, or anywhere near downtown, for that matter.

And, just in case you want to keep an eye on the game without attending, some of the places making the list have televisions onsite to check the score.
  1. Beef and Boards Dinner Theatre-Located far north of the craziness which will ensue, the live theater venue has on stage Dixie Swim Club, (review here) Steel Magnolias-meets-Golden Girls comedy for those wanting to laugh, rather than scream at football fumbles. Website: BeefandBoards.com
  2. Conner Prairie-Hearthside Dinners are a family friendly activity that makes learning about history fun. Website: ConnerPrairie.org
  3. Hoosier Park Racing and Casino-Located outside the circle of madness, in Anderson, the casino offers almost 200 slot machines, poker tables and several restaurants for those wanting to bet on something besides the pigskin. Website: HoosierPark.com
  4. Paoli Peaks-Skiing, snowboarding or curling up in front of the massive fireplace are all available on Super Bowl Sunday. Website: PaoliPeaks.com
  5. French Lick Resort-Escaping from all the hustle is easy in this southern Indiana getaway. Spas, restaurants and nearby shopping allow you to relax resort style. Website: FrenchLickResort.com
  6. Mallow Run Winery-Winter Warmup Weekend, in Bargersville, dishes up soup, warm bread and desserts along with live music and wine tastings. Website: MallowRun.com

Top 10 Performing Arts in Indianapolis 2011

Gotta Go Top 10 List for Performing Arts
Indianapolis 2011
The annual compilation of the Gotta Go Top 10 Best Performing Arts performances in Indianapolis is always difficult to select due to the quantity of great talent and shows in the Indy metro area. As the 12th largest city in the nation, the Circle City offers something for just about everyone.
With so many shows, and only one of me, let me say as always that this is not an all-inclusive list and represents only the performances personally attended and reviewed by this critic.
Some of the reviews were in print, some online, and some were on WIBC.
Whether you agree, disagree, or have comments or questions, I would enjoy hearing your thoughts.

1.  Opening Night Gala: Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra with Maestro Krzysztof Urbanski-Urbanski brings in a whole new era for Indy. The energy that evening was palpable. Click here for review.

2.  Puccini People: Dance Kaleidoscope-Quite simply, this is the best, in my opinion, of David Hochoy's work in the five years I have been a performing arts critic in Indianapolis. I reviewed it on WIBC to give listeners the time to catch it.**

3.  Stephanie J. Block: The Cabaret at The Columbia Club-Fun, flirty and feisty. Click here for review.

4.  Idina Menzel: ISO-Delightful, charming and utterly impish. Click here for review.

5.  39 Steps: IRT-Proving it doesn’t have to be dramatic to be worth noting. Click here for review.

6.  Singin' in the Rain: Beef and Boards-Wet with a movie-set ambiance. The acting, the set, the dancing…all fabulous. Click here for review.

7.  Evening with the Stars: Indianapolis City Ballet-This is consistently in the Top Ten List for an excellent reason. I reviewed it on WIBC to give listeners the time to catch it.*

8.  Dracula: IRT-The not-so-light version by Stephen Dietz packed the house. Click here for review.

9.  Tierney Sutton:The Cabaret at The Columbia Club-Ethereal and earthy at same time. Click here for review.

10. Madama Butterfly: Indianapolis Opera-A classic story told well. Click here for review.

*2011 Lesson learned: Write and post all reviews -- even on those performances I cover on air in order to have something to share with you at the end of the year.

Bottom Line: I have enjoyed 2011 and look forward to Indy's offerings for 2012. So many more could have, should have been mentioned. Each year it becomes more and more difficult to choose the best of the performances and that is a great problem to have.

Easley Winery Strikes Gold with Riesling in San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition

Easley Winery Strikes Gold in San Francisco
***Press Release***
INDIANAPOLIS, IN (January 18, 2012) - Easley Winery has struck gold with its 2010 Michigan Riesling - a gold medal that is, at the 2012 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. Selected as one of four gold medals awarded in a competitive field of similar Riesling offerings, Easley Winery could not be more proud of its 2010 Michigan Riesling.

"It's great to step out onto the field of competition and bring home a victory," states Easley Winery owner Mark Easley. "Easley Winery has been producing high-quality wines for years, and this gold medal, along with other recent wins such as Reggae Red's Best of Class at the Pacific Rim Wine Competition and others, keep driving that point home."

Easley Winery's 2010 Michigan Riesling is produced at the Easley Winery production facilities in downtown Indianapolis, and the Riesling grapes are grown in southwest Michigan, just 12 miles north of Indiana's border.

The climate of southwest Michigan proves to be the ideal location for growing Riesling grapes. Lake Michigan's effect on the vineyard is similar to the traditional Riesling growing regions of the world. Easley Winery works very closely with their grape growers to produce the finest wines possible. Easley Winery has been creating high-quality wines and champagnes since 1974. Depending on the year and season, Easley Winery produces 20 or more wine or champagne varieties. 2010 Michigan Reisling can be purchased at Indiana Meijer locations, select retailers that carry great wines, and Easley Winery, where great wines are created everyday.
